mariner 75hp tilt n trim

have a 1995 mariner 75hp .
when i hit either tilt button all I hear is a click inside the motor cowl. the sound comes from the back drivers side of the motor.
where do I go next?
The only boat repair shop in my town closed about 8 months ago.

check battery voltage, make sure it has juice! then check solenoides hooked to tilt trim, sounds like they are goin bad, or bad connections.

Ok , I know about the blue and green wire.
Clue me what to do to check.

One is up and one down but what about the ground wire?

blue is up think sky! green down think grass!! you can check grouning, but if you have a strong battery and power to solinodes but nothing is happing, then they are bad, if no power to solinodes other problems and you need to find them and let us know whats going on. check for tight bolts and connections. or bad wires. you can also check by using jumper cables, thats how i do my testing, just hot to blue and ground to ground, and then move hot to green. that should make motor go up and or down. if not solinodes are surely shot. if it does move engine up and down check the other things i listed.

Ok, did the above .

I tried 3 different ways to check tilt motor.

The last check, I took the wires loose from the post. I hooked a wire to the battery + and to the blue wire, then a wire to the - other end to the black.

Nothing happened, no click, no noise, no nothing.

So I guessing the tilt motor is bad.
Where would I get the best deal.
My motor is a three wire, can a 2 wire be made to fit?

Yes, but! It would take a LOT of rewiring....

My preference is to say 'No' they are not interchangeable, but in truth, if you understand electrical theory, then yes, you can make it work... I only say that because if I said a flat out 'No', someone would challenge it... and technically they would be right....

The reason I ask about using the 2 wire is that somewhere I read that the 2 wire would work by doing something ?. Also it would respond better.

I'll just go with the 3 wire. Where's the best price you guys.

How long will this last?
I pulled the trim motor off , tore it apart. Sanded the insides, cleaned it.

Put her back together. It works better than when I got the motor.

Also sealed everything, every hole and bolt. New fluid.

Hi. Firstly forgive me if i'm putting this in the wrong area. I don't no where to put it. With regards to trim motor suddenly stopped working i had the same prob i hav a 75 Mariner between "95 and "00 model. Solenoid was clicking but no sound from trim motor. I opened it up, sanded the armatuer with water paper and soaked it in thinners and cleaned the carbon build up off with the thinners put it back and its sounding more powerfull now. I stil have one problem though. I lost alot of trim oil (pink atf oil) and i opened the fill cap on top left hand side of motor bracket whilst motor is trimmed up fully and no oil would go in, it would just over flow. If i open manual release valve on bottom right hand side of motor bracket the oil just comes out from there. Does anyone know how i can fill it? I'm going to try connect a hose to the filling cap with a funnel and fill the funnel with oil and use the trim switch to suck the oil in. Don't know if its what i'm supposed to do. Thanks in advance for any help. And once again i'm really sorry for posting here. I searched but couldn't find a topic on How To Refill Mariner trim oil.

The reservoir only holds about 1/4th of the fluid needed to fill your trim system. You have to repeatedly fill then lift until the system is full. When you lower a full system the reservoir will over flow. As you cycle the system up and down it will self-bleed out all of the air. Your final fill should be in the fully raised position. Do not remove filler plug with engine lowered.

Sorry guys I know this is an old thread...But I belive this is what I am looking for??!!!

1) The (+ Battery) red wire goes to the bottom solinoid...which in theory if I put a test light to all three (+) terminals I should have power RIGHT?

2) And Red #8 wire with 20 amp inline should ony have power when the swicth is hit up or down? Right? I am very good with mechanics but I am having a big brain f..t here! A"Frienfd rehung this outboard for me and failed to hook up trim and tilt errrrrrr LOL! Please help!!

Does your starter work? If so then the red wire feeding Batt+ into solenoid bank is OK. All three solenoids should have a clean, solid, and corrosion free connection to the red wire.

All three solenoids are the same. All three work just like a starter solenoid on a car. They have a positive input from the battery, a control wire, and a high capacity output. The solenoid shorts the battery input to the solenoid output when voltage is applied to the control wire. (it's just a remote control light switch with a control wire instead of a paddle)

If you are confused then lift the blue wire and touch to positive. If the trim motor does not spin then the trim motor is broken.

On a side note, if a trim solenoid goes out then you may consider converting to trim relays. They do not make 3w motors anymore for this boat. You'll eventually end up replacing the solenoids with relays anyway in order to install a 2w trim motor. The cost of a complete wiring harness and solenoids is about $30. If you pull the black wire out of center hold in relay socket the it becomes a solenoid and your boat is wired for 3w trim. If you stick the black wire back into the center hole then your boat is magically transformed into 2w trim. And, yes, the standard relay socket has removeable terminals.
