Hi there.
We have a Mariner (Mercury) 60 EFI outboard on which we have had a little incident.
During sailing the engine suddenly lost power and a strange noise appeared. When the cover of the engine was removed we tried disconnecting the supply to the ignition coils one by one and then determined that one of the cylinders didn't produce any effect. We tried switching ignition coil and ignition spark plug with out any success. We then removed the plating with the coils, the fuel pump and the cover which reveals the valve rockers and then found the error: The valve rocker was broken in one of it's fixing points (see attached image) and thus it was sliding up and down in stead of pushing the valves to open position. We also found small metal fragments in the bottom of the oil pan. A more negative side effect is that the thread to the fixating bolt has been ruptured so the entire block has to be replaced. The engine is relatively new - it has about 100 running hours or so, so it is still under guarantee, and the engine is manufactured in 2006 (in China).
Is this a common problem for these engines? I mean this engine is less than a year old and has been taken very good care of (new oil in gear and engine every three months or so and warm dry storage).
I have tried to locate Mariner Service Bulletins but haven't been able to find any
