Re: Mariner 40HP

This is a difficult one but the Japanese built 6E9s began:

6E9 1981-1983 40FM/40FE/40FEML

Yours comes up as a 40C ML Twin Carb:

40C ML 6E9-304784 - 6E9-306713 1984

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...årslista/Mariner4055hp/tabid/461/Default.aspx

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/703.cfm

Please let me know if you feel this is not correct. If it seems OK to you, you can find a service manual for it here:

Re: Mariner 40HP

Well I got the motor running yesterday.

However, I noticed some water spitting out of the drive shaft (I think) housing where it and the steering stem connect.

Must be a gasket somewhere that needs replacing.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Photobucket is back up for me so does anyone have any idea on this one? See where there is water and exhaust coming out? Must be a seal somewhere?

I think I will drop the lower uint and have a peek.

Re: Mariner 40HP

I,m having the same trouble I just redid all the gaskets replace the upper main bearing with a new used retainer as mine had a strpped stator bolt hole. after putting everything back together it ran good and pissed fine. but i was still getting water coming throug the steering arm. I took the power head off again and see there is some wear on the waterport of the exhaust plate where it meets the powerhead. I filed it down just enough to see mostly flat shinny surface. The deteriorated section faces directlt tword the area of the water coming out of the steering arm. I,m on my way over to the merc marina and get a new powerhead base gasket. I,ll try to let you know how I make out good luck

Re: Mariner 40HP

update I put on the new gasket and replaced the powerhead with the same result. Upon further inspection the water spitting out the back exhaust port is hotter than the water coming out of the tell tale which is actually a bit more than luke warm. The water coming throug the steering arm is as hot as the exhaust port water temp. I have 2 holes in my exhaust. tube that may be factory made or someone drilled it. anyway I beleive the water is from those exhaust tube holes is spitting water into the midsection. It also send smoke into the midsection which appears to affect the air in the powerhead when the covers are all on. It drops about 2 to 3 RPM. I thought about pluging the holes but the engine is running and pissing fine so I,m just gonna leave it be. fo now I may get a new exhaust port plate next year. Time to go fishing

I do have one more ring seal i havn,t figures on where it went if this is supposed to be at the top of the watertube above the gromet then thats the only other place I can see it coming from. I,ll be damned if i am gonna tear the powerhead back off again to replace it anytime soon

Re: Mariner 40HP

I changed lube in the lower unit today. Seems like it was quite low but he color looked good with very few very fine metal particles in it.:)
I used Quicksilver Premium Gear Lube.

My next task was to take off the prop. However, after getting the cotter pin, nut and washer removed, it appears to be stuck in there pretty good. I started using Liquid Wrench to see if it will penetrate and help loosen it up.

Any suggestions on how to get this off?

Re: Mariner 40HP

Well I have been some PB Blaster to see if this helps.

I also picked up a 3 jaw gear puller and am going to give that a try.

I might try some heat as well as the prop is junk anyways.

Re: Mariner 40HP

Well I soaked it again tonight with some PB Blaster.

The puller didn't help, at least not yet. All it did was bend one of the prop blades.

Tomorrow I'll try to get the puller back on with a little pressure and try some heat. Maybe the combo will do the trick.

Re: Mariner 40HP

Update:
Nothing has worked so far so I am working on cutting the outer hub off and will then carefully work on the inner hub with a Dremel tool with reinforced cutting wheels.

Re: Mariner 40HP

After a few hours of work, I was able to cut off the prop and not damage the splines on the prop shaft. :D

I used a combination of the Sawzall, Air Cutter and a Dremel tool with a reinforced cutoff wheel. A little careful work with a hammer and chisel helped too.

Re: Mariner 40HP

Can someone post a pic (if you have one) of what the inside of the driveshaft housing looks like when you have the lower unit off?

Here is mine but have no idea if this looks normal.

Is it normal to have water/exhaust in this part of the driveshaft housing when running?

Here is a video of water coming out of that cavity when it is running. The video should play if you click on the image right below.

Re: Mariner 40HP

The inside of any outboard would do. It does not have to be a 40 hp Mariner.

Thanks in advance
