Even better, add a drain valve to that hose. Then you don't need to remove it at all. That hose was always my #1 pain in the neck when winterizing. I added a drain to the hose and it makes winterizing so much easier.
What did you use?

Ayuh,.... I used a short piece of pipe(that fits inside the hose) that I drilled, 'n tapped for a drain fitting, then mounted it just before the P/S cooler,.....
It drains that hose, 'n the P/S cooler,....

What's this Winterizing thing you refer to? I use my boat year round as temperatures rarely drop below 5C here, and once a year (maybe) it'll just touch 0....

I didn't know about winterizing until last year either...I think it's the process where you dunk the outdrive in antifreeze and then replace the block in the spring. (And I really need to make it to Australia...)

Wondering if a PVC ball valve would work?

OMC & Volvo thoughtfully put a drain plug on the PS cooler that would drain that hose & cooler but it is just about un reachable. How I drain mine is put the outdrive down; then disconnect the front end of the water intake hose at the stat housing & hold it sown in the bilge. That drains most of the water. Then I hold it up & fill it with no tox AF ( either -100 or a batch of Sierra no tox AF I mix up myself) till it comes out the drive water intakes. Then reconnect the front end of the hose. Doing that I have not had to try to reach that drain plug for over 15 years and never had a freeze up with temps as low as zero F.

Be nice to have a valve there, the accessibility sucks in my boat.
Same here. Pulling that hose was the absolute worst part of winterizing. Even with the drain, it's not easy to reach the plug, but it's much better that prying the hose off the p.s. cooler every Fall.

I also installed similar drain on the big U-shaped hose on the front of the engine going to the circulating pump. That drain is nice, too.

Thanks for all the replies. It made for an interesting read. I don’t have to winterize where I am either and the grease was a great idea I will be using.
I got the hose off with the pick, twist and pull method.
Tks again
