Re: Mandatory Military Service
Both male and female? Does it also include the children/grandchildren of congress, the President, or any other political office holder, or will there be special outs for these people. Any of these politicians that have children/grandchildren at that age with zero outs will most likely not support this movement. Remember, the armed forces are for the working class, those of us, much like myself, deemed expendable. I saw an interview about a year ago of a member of congress when he was asked if he would send his son to Iraq since he was in support of the bombing. His reply was that his son was married with a family. In other words, there is no way he would put his son in harms way. I have no problem with the feelings of this man, until he says we should send our loved ones over without a choice when he is not willing to send his. I think when it comes to sending their own blood over to fight on the front lines, there is an entirely different mentality. Bottom line, I think it would be very difficult to do this without double standards somewhere, somehow, for a special few.

Before you get upset, my statement "armed forces are for the working class" is not necessarily my sentiment. I have a good friend that recruited for the marines for about 8 years and he has shared many recruiting tactics. It is not that they would not take a kid from a well off family, they just don't waste time recruiting them because statistically, they are much better off (numbers wise) recruiting a kid that is looking at a future of 9 to 5 every day.

My answer to your original question, is that I would have a difficult time supporting this because of the double standards that would be in existance. I feel this even though I think there are a great many that would benefit.

John
