Re: Make floatable & comfy...cabin build help

Nice looking little boat. When I first saw her picture I thougth "nice little Novi, she shows here Canadian maritime heritage" (Nova Scotia / Newfoundland). But then I saw you are from NSW, so I am assuming Aussie? -- enjoying the summer?
--- Now for your boat. I would be careful how much of a 'cabin' you add. your hull is pretty round bottomed and may be quite 'tender'. ("Tender" means not a whole lot of initial stability, it will roll back and forth fairly easilly.) This means that adding weight 'up high' as in a cabin top will make the condition only worse, (she will roll even more in a seaway). And an open cabin top has the ability of acting like a sail or parachute in the wind, and a good wind could have the ability to acually roll her over to the point she starts flooding. -- Not saying it will happen, just saying be careful about what you build up high.
The 'deck' you build inside her is properly called the "cockpit sole".
As she appears to be fairly lightly built I'd ba careful about that "middle of the dash" that you took out. It looks like it was actually built as a ring frame, maybe to keep her from panting (keep the sides from flexing in and out).
A little 20 hp Yanmer would be perfect for her!

I might suggest replacing that floor between the shaft log and the engine beds ("floors" are those frame members that run sideways (left-right) - they are supposed to be continuous across the top of the keel and not cut like that (just drill a hole for the prop shaft, don't cut a big chunk out). They do not serve their purpose when cut like that.
Also, this place is great for fiberglass boats, but the people here really don't understand traditional wood construction. I would suggest you check out the "Woodenboat" forum. There are also a good number of Aussie's (Oz too) who hang out there. Maybe you can find someone in your area to check out your project.
Again, nice little traditional boat, well worth the effort!

I like the shape of the wheel house that you have designed. Very traditional looking and 'just right' for the boat. About that middle seat, ..... The way it is built (heavy timber with big knees tying it to the hull) it really is a lot more than a 'seat'. It is a structural part of the boat that will keep the sides from flexing in and out. If you are going to use the boat on only flat calm lake waters it probably could be removed, just keep in mind that it was put there as more as part of the framing and structure of the boat and not just as a 'seat' to sit on. (It is actually called a thwart.) It's certainly your boat but I kind of like it. It 'looks' like it belongs there to me.

Looks good. She would fit right in up in eastern Canada & 'downeast' Maine.
