Main jets size for volvo penta 3.0 GLP-E

Hello Community,

I exchanged my holley 2300 carburetor from my 2008 chaparral with Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-E for a rebuild one.

Despite mixture screws being at less than one turn out, the plugs are black. It also has a hard time starting as well as wot at 2300rpm only

I suspect that the rebuild carburetor they gave me has the wrong main jets....

Can someone let me know what the correct size for main jets is?

Thank you!

Ok I just took the carb apart

Port main jet: 71
Starboard main jet: 72
Power valve: 7.5 ---> this seems kind of big? Can this cause richness by opening at 7.5" hg

Welcome aboard!

The 7.5 power valve can be part of your issues. The normal one for a Marine holley is a 2.5 or 3.5. The rating is how much vacuum it takes to keep it closed, so with too high a rating it will open too soon or maybe even never close above idle.

Hello Maclin

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and the warm welcome. I have ordered the original 2.5"hg. Power Valve and will report back!

BTW all cylinders 1,2 and 3 habe 12bar only cylinder 4 has 10.5 bar. I hope that is within tolerance.

Regarding compression, usually within 10% is considered within tolerance. But with a 4 cylinder, that 10.5 bar (152psi) up against the other 3 at 12bar (174psi) may be noticeable in performance.

Post back with your compression check routine. Here are some hilites, I apologize if this is not new to you, I tend to post for current and future searchers that may come upon this...:
  • Throttle wide open.
  • Battery in top charged condition.
  • All spark plugs out.
  • Put some oil into any low-reading cylinders and try again.
  • Be sure to protect the impeller by having water supplied to the engine.
I would want to do a leakdown test on that cylinder to see it it is valves or rings. If valves may be time to look into a refresh on the head. If rings, well just enjoy it until you can't :)

Hi Maclin,

Before I check the compression again. I would like to make sure I have the right carburetor. I suspect that the rebuild shop gave me something entirely "Mickey moused"

The engine runs fine once it started, but has hard starting no matter if cold or warm. The worst when warm. It also idles very low until I hit the gas once.

Can you let me know what the correct carburetor or at least correct nozzles are. I'm also trying to find the accelerator nozzle size.

2008 chaparral with GLP-E
Engine# 3869375 / 4012223061

They gave me:
Holley 230 #3887685 / 75028-4 / 1418

Parts replaced:

- coil
- distributor cap and finger
- spark plugs
- fuel pump
- removed siphoned check valve for testing purposes
- ingnition cables
- PVC valve

I had bought an ignition module but the rpm did not drop when connecting the shunt so I suspect it was the wrong one or bad?

Thank you in advance!

Best
Martin

I couldn't find your specific carb number in my Volvo book but the 3.0 liter carbs are usually jetting with 71 or 72 jets and a 2.5 power valve
My 2bbl Holley has a 6 power valve, but it is on a 5.7 and it pull enough vacuum at WOT to close a 4.5 valve

Whenever you replace a carb with a non OEM rebuilt, you run the risk of improper calibration

Have you checked the float height? It sounds like it may be set too high

Hi Jimmbo,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I adjusted the float parallel with inverted bowl.

I thought the GS and GL are V8?

My engine is a GLP-E

Ok I'm at a loss here...

The boat idles rough below 900rpm and still has hard starting no matter if cold or warm.

I had replaced the fuel pump a while ago with a brand new volvo penta but also had the carb apart at the same time.

The fuel pressure is at 0.5 bar or 7 psi at idle. So I guess pump is good. Not sure what else can cause the hard starting
