I took my magneto apart on my 59 Johnson 50 hp. The ball bearings look a little dry. Can I just oil them with motor oil?

I have no idea, but my response will bump your question back to the top where a knowledgeable person can answer your question.

The service manual says to wash the bearings, then pack them half full of high melting point grease (340degrees). I guess that would be something suitable for wheel bearings.

Re: Magneto bearings

Wheel bearing grease is not suitable for the sort of temperature specified.

My favourite, Castrol LM, is only suitable up to 120C, that's only about 250 F.

To get to 170 C / 340 F you have to be looking at proper high temperature greases. I found for example Castrol Firetemp X2 which can be used up to 180C /355 F but heaven knows where you'd get these sorts of greases unless they can be obtained as an OEM service product.
