It is a 1989 Johnson 90 hp. I'll attach what I mean now I got day light. So the picture show how off the pinion is which is not aligning nor allowing the shaft to go in.

Lol sorry for the vagueness. I'm putting a lower gear ase and lowered back together as the clutch dog was not fully engaging making the gear system slip/grind. But now I ran into the problem of the pinion gear not properly aligning which is keeping me from putting the shaft into the pinion.

Remove propshaft and thrust bearing housing.----Re-install making sure it is " home " and then fit the pinion.----Should fall in place with ease.-----Was the shift rod properly set / adjusted ?-----Did you find damage on reverse gear and clutch dog ?

No damage on gears only on clutch dog. And the shift rod is just in there not set yet. Need to find the right measurement. I had trouble getting the pinion into that place to begin with as there was no room what so ever. It seems as though the prop shaft is out too much not allowing alignment of the pinion but I assure you it is as far back and in place. But I'll get back to you in a bit here as I will do what you mentioned and hope it works for me šŸ˜Š Thank you for all your advice along the way very much appreciated

Hey. So I removed and reinstalled made sure the pin went in on the shift rod casing so it's home as you say. But still getting no alignment. The forward gear seems to be too much forward to make room for pinion to align properly. I followed a diagram guide how to properly put together the shift rod assembly, forward gear and clutch dog onto the prop shaft so it should be correct. But still not aligning

There appears to be an issue with the thrust bearing for the forward gear.----Perhaps the wrong bearing .----Take it apart and post picture of bearing parts beside the gear.

Not so much a guide book but the parts description of the disassembled gear case. Ad the pictures I posted. And okay I'll try the guide pin.

Question. Do both snap rings go into those two grooves behind the reverse gear. Seems the bearing carrier can't go anymore and still not catching.
