Lower unit won't trim down

Guys, I've got a 1977 Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 260 in it and a round-tail outdrive. The lower unit will raise fine, but won't go back down. The motor sounds the same both ways, up and down (I believe it's functioning). Any ideas what might be going on or what to look for?

Thanks,

Thanks guys. I also forgot to mention that when the boat is put in gear, if you can manage to get the lower unit to trim down (I haven't been able to do so, but the owner has) when you put the boat in FWD gear, the out drive will come up on it's own. Not sure if that would still be a trim cylinder binding or not. I'll check the manual for other ideas as well.

FYI

if the drive trim up by itself

you either have a bad switch at the handle or sticking solonoid--either way suggest you get that taken care of ASAP - dangerous condition to operate boat

as far as binding

over 4000 psi going up

less than 2000 psi going down

hence the binding will be overcome going up NOT going down
