I am an auto mechanic and bought my first boat with a 1976 35 hp johnson 2 stroke 35R76G. I also have the service manual but didnt find specifically how to screw this rod back in and that is my problem right now. I took it out because I couldnt pull or push it by hand and thought it might be because it was caked with black stuff and I wanted to clean it off. I cleaned it up but now I cant get it back in to screw it down. Something ( maybe sleeve) is in the way and wont move back into place for me. I tried with a piece of wire but it just doesn't seem to move back into place. Pics (best I could) below. TIA 😊

Another poster offered you help, based on a 1959 model 35 HP and it was then deleted.----Good luck with your project.

Pictures are horrible. I had that same motor but never pulled the shifter. Pulled it because it was black? It's a two stroke!

Racerone is your man and you questioned his integrity? I hate to say it but wrong move.

Best of luck to you.

Look up at Crowley Marine the schematics for your 35R76G.
The schematics you have posted is not the same!
The one you posted is for a later model.
The first two pics are not showing anything but bluuuur.

hey calm down guys ;) , op is new to this by the sounds of it.
OP , the guys trying to help know their stuff , give them the info they ask and you will get your help , without the correct info on these motors it is very hard to give proper advice .
some motors , you can realign the shift mechanizem while assembled and screw it back in ,
others models you may / will have to take the dog gear assembly apart , screw it in , adjust it then assemble the gearbox.

correct info or good pics of serial number and you will get your answers..

if the pivot screw #13 was taken out and not aligned back-in I suspect anything goes since part# 12 may be hard to align with the shift rod
