Hello,
I'm new to here so bear with me please.
I'm trying to replace the water pump on an 85hp 1975 Johnson Javelin outboard. However i can not get the lower unit to come off. This Lower unit has never been removed. I've taken out six bolts, four from the side fins of the unit and one located infront of the trim fin and the one secret bolt under the trim fin. I've gotten the lower unit to drop about an inch and a quarter and it budge anymore than that. We think the only thing holding it from droping is the shifter linkage. right now it is in the drive gear when put in neutral and reverse the lower unit moves upward toward the engine and stil will not budge. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Got to release the shift rod under the bottom carb, after you've gotten all the bolts. Good luck. OEM shop manual might help, available here.

how would you release it? It looks to be rivited into the linkage.

I don't have your motor or a shop manual for it.
