lower unit interchangeable?

ok, first off i have searched and searched this site and googled everything i can think of. i am just not having any luck. i have a 79 50 hp mercury, i am wondering what year ranges of lower units will fit this power head. from the info i have gathered on here if it is a 4 cyl like mine most will fit? is there a web site that people use for this info? if so i would gladly look up this info myself.

My notes show the following:
1976-1985..... 50 hp
1989 ............ 40 Magnum
1986-89........ 45 hp

do you have a secret place you find this info? LOL, and should i have to worry about gear ratio's if i go with the 50? thanks
