Help on washers that go on top of lower unit shift shaft. On removing the lower unit, there were no washers other than the seal and washer on top of the seal. There looks to be another rubber washer and (in the forum a stainless?) washer on top of that. The washer shown in the parts breakdown (I believe item #50) looks to be a fiber washer. A fiber washer did come in the seals kit, but I have to believe that the rubber washer with the fiber washer would disappear very quickly.
Question: Is the top washer stainless? There are two rubber washers that are the same inside dia. that came with the kit and fit the top of the shift shaft perfectly. The one is very thin. The other is about 1/4" thick and would more likely use the space I need for the shift shoe to engage the stirrup. Is this a correct assumption?

Ya know, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people that ask questions.... :)

Yes! No! The intermediate shift shaft slides over the lower shift shaft and sits on top of the stainless steel washer. #50 ia a stainless steel washer. Assuming you are talking about a impeller kit, no "O" ring of any kind is used in conjunction with the shift shaft.

Question: do you have forward and neutral gears? A little more information and should be able to figure this out.

Re: Lower shift shaft washers (no reverse)

Sorry Terry... Yes... Was having a problem with no reverse. Found the intermediate shift shaft foot was not high enough to engage the stirrup but if I held it up with a screwdriver, the gears worked good... So, took off out drive and am going through everything... Since this was the initial problem (and there were no washers at all when I removed the lower unit) I am trying to get it right as I put it back together... The rubber washer is an actual washer (not an "o" ring). Both of them look to be spacers of some sort... I needed to make up for about 1/4 to 3/8"... A stainless washer on top of the seal assembly might only get me about 1/4" max... The wider rubber washer would seem to give the extra space...
Your thoughts? Thank you....

The washer is .39" X 1" X .06" so it is large enough to sit on top of the gearhousing casting and is actually above the seal assembly, so it will give you the height that you need. They have a tendency to fall off when you take the gearhousing off if at any time you turned it over. You can probably pick one up from your local Mercruiser dealer Part #12-29395. Just did mine today, so am pretty sure it will work;).
