Lower end unit will not re-seat

I'm havin some issues here and could use all the help I can get. I've just replaced the Impeller on my '01 Mercury 200 2 stroke carbureted. Lower end came off easy enough. Had a friend with experience helping. Re-assembly just isn't as slick. Impeller kit installed nice. Everything is lined up, greased. The driveshaft is straight and true. It has not been tweeked, we've been very careful. The spline is not entering the flywheel. There appears to be a "sleeve" like bushing or such that the shaft would fit up into, right before entrance to the flywheel. Well it had slipped to the downside of the shaft hole opening following gravity. Had a "half moon" like line up where the spline would enter the flywheel. Blocking the spline/shaft from entering. With a long probe we could slide it back into place, it is very loose, but only with the motor in the down position and no way to hold it securely in place as the motor would go into the upright position to install the lower half. It, the bushing in question, could not be removed from the shaft hole as I could see......

Check that the impeller discharge tube is going into it's neoprene bushing under the powerhead ok. Also check that the shift linkage isn't jammed up somewhere . You may have rotated spline a bit. Keep trying but never force.

I know reassembly of mine (86 force 125) was a bear! everything seemed perfect, but would just not slide back together. Kept working on it and eventually it just slid into place... hang in there you will get it with patience!

Definately easier if you have a helper too.

That's a little "seal" that is pressed inta tha bottom of tha crank. They sometimes come out when ya pull tha gear case. Tha ONLY way ta fix it right is pull tha powerhead and install a new one. Some have a "trick" (myself included) that works sometimes. Most use tha trick when they know tha motor will be pulled at a later date. Its not a GOOD fix for everday boat guy..........

Hey Dukedog, I figured it was that seal after searching a bit. what I've done is use a probe and a bit of grease to hold it in place and then "stuck it". Seated nice. No forcing. From what I understand that seal is to keep the water off the crankshaft and spline area. I Realize I'm going to have to pull the powerhead soon and make sure I have that seal sitting in there properly doing what its suppose to do........That being said, how much of a bear is it to pull the powerhead. What suggestions do you all have for pulling a powerhead?

With all tha right stuff its not much of a problem but "right stuff" is a must. It will include a Lifting Eye, Coffin' hoist or rented engine hoist (best) or small chain fall. Some shade tree types use all kinds a stuff but that makes it a lot harder and usually ends up with something else broke that doesn't need ta be............If ya like I can pm ya exactly what ta take apart and what not to............

That would be great Duke, I probably won't do it for a couple weeks or so. From what I understand, I've got a bit of time before I've got to set this bushing/seal in correctly, but I could use all the info I can get from an experienced person such as yourself......The last thing I'll do is forget about it and think everything is ok, but I do want to get out once or twice in the next week or two. Just short little jaunts........This all started because my alarm sounded when I would open her up. A friend riding with me said I probably needed a new impeller. It's obvious with earmuffs I'm getting better water pressure now..... enough of that...PM yes
Appreciate ya
