low compression #2 cylinder - 1988 suzuki dt85

without good compression in #2, it will not light off and burn as it should n the cylinder.
So it dumps fuel and air into the exhaust where it mixes with the hot burning exhaust of the other cylinders and finally burns. causing the noise you were hearing

I think I made a dumb mistake, I pulled the shift rid out of the gear case and now it won't go all the way back down, it's about half inch out. Is it true the gear housing needs to come apart for it to go back in?

first time working a LU, pulled prop shaft and dog clutch, oil seal was a pain to get off. everything looks ok? bearing house has lots of sand in it, what is a good way to clean it? soak everything in warm soapy water then blow dry with compressed air?
