Loose ball bearing

I recently bought a 08 G3 Eagle 165 with an 07 Yamaha f60 outboard. It had no foot mounted on it. I was told that it was making a grinding noise from the top end. It did come with a cracked foot. It appears that Canada was struck before he decomissioned the boat. When I picked it up it had been sitting on the trailer for 3yrs. Taking my buddy's word on the powerhead I removed it to begin the search for broken parts.
I benched the powerhead and found the ball bearing. I have no idea where it might have come from. Hoping someone here might have a clue.
I removed the plugs and pulled the flywheel. The powerhead has plenty of compression and the only sounds I hear is the compressed air coming from the plud holes. I'm hoping that the cracked lower unit is what the grinding noises were coming from.

some motors might have a spring-loaded ball on shifter or other place/linkage that helps locate and hold linkage in certain place

When a boat huts a rock up here its usually the Canadian shield. lol
I haven't seen a ball bearing in the service manual but I haven't really read up on it.

??----That ball is part of the shift detent set-up.----Clearly shown in the parts manual online !!

Much appreciated shifts as it should now.
We just got a new lower unit.
Wouldn't have found the ball bearing without removing the powerhead.
