Looking for Throttle Control fixes. need help

I just started a restoration project on a late 60's 17' Skagit.
It has an early 70's merc with what looks like "750" on the beat up cowling. It runs like a champ but the throttle/gear controls up at the helm are not working properly. It shifts from nuetral to forward and reverse but it wont give me any throttle.

I dont mind troubleshooting it and figuring it out on this project but im also considering just upgrading to a new throttle control box so i dont have to worry about it at sea.

im just wondering what type of new throttle control would work on that old engine. OR if there is anyplace or anyone that i can get an original working throttle control box.

thanks in advance guys

First disconnect the throttle cable from the engine and see if the trouble is in the box or engine linkage.

already did that and the problem lies within the box. the donkey who owned it before me had the thing taken appart and its missing parts and i did my best to get it back together but im not sure what it is missing. i got the boat started and shifting but wont throttle up. it looks to me like its one or two small pieces that are missing that are causing the problem.

I have pretty much just written the old one off and am now trying to find a new "old one" or a new replacement model that will work. Im just not sure how to go about it since i have never messed with changing a throttle box out.

Your problem won't be with a newer box not working but you need to find one for distributor ign. or change your wiring harness.

i got a comander 2000 single handle and it works great. Mercury throttles work great when there new but when the got old they get sloppy. You might be able to find parts on eBay for your throttle and possibly adjust the cables which may be beat as well. if you have a good running engine why play around with junk old parts you want to go out and have fun not repair your old throttle every week or so ---->just a suggestion

All things can be repaired as good as or better than new. If the control lived in salt water and is corroded don't bother. If you could post a picture I might be able to help you. I have an older quicksilver control that may solve the puzzel.

there is no wiring harness running from the box to the motor. There are a shift cable and throttle cable coming out of the back of the throttle box. thats it. the ignition is on the dash and is a newer type. same one i used to instal on bayliners and maxum working for OBC.

thats kinda what im thinking. I would like to buy a new set up so i dont have to worry about it. But I can only do that if its within my budget. If i can save a buck and get through this fishing season i would be able to upgrade the new one this next winter when i do some more update/rebuilds.

This is a salt water boat. its not completely corroded. She cleaned up nicely. if i want to fix it the problem lies with me being able to figure out what parts are missing and then find those parts.
