Try to get a genuine OMC service manual before trying that job.

Be especially careful when dropping the lower unit that you do not break the Electromagnet coil wires. Have some support to keep it from dropping to much or you need to remove the wire running through the intermediate housing in order to remove it safely without damaging it. On your engine there should be a tag that has a model number something like "990234E MT" - that will tell you which model Stringer you have.

A 78 model would not be electric shift.----A 78 model boat might have a 77 model drive with electric shift.

I believe that is called a Hydro shift or something similar to that. That was the next model up from an electric shift. They did away with the electric shift due to the Default neutral if the coils failed or the boat no longer had power to shift it. The newer model default was then made drive. It took hydrolics to take it into neutral and reveres.
