Looking at a 1990 Renken on auction with a reported "coupler" problem

What might this mean? What kinda "coupler problem"?

1900 CLASSIC PLEASUR BOAT IN GREAT

SHAPE. THE MOTOR RUNS AND SOUNDS GREAT

THE DONOR HAS STATED THAT A COUPLER NEEDS

TO BE REPLACED IN THE LOWER UNIT. I'M NOT SURE WHAT COUPLER BUT DO KNOW THAT IT SHIFTS FROM FORWARD TO NEUTRAL TO REVERSE WITH OUT ANY PROBLEMS.

all we know right now is it's an i/o.

what kind of i/o could be helpful for comments on the question.

i would think most folks would think of the coupler as being the part between the flywheel and the drive input shaft. but w/o knowing what kinda drive?

so it's a donor boat that's in great shape? that seems like a questionable statement to me. donor boat, and in great shape don't go together imho...

With all due respect, Neither the seller nor potential buyer knows what (if anything) is really wrong with the engine/drive.

Without some basic info, (like make, model, year) no one here can even reliably guess......

I suspect the doohicky i was out of alignment relative to that watchamacallit and the widgets weren't adjusted properly. You'll probably need a new whoseit to fix it properly.

Pics show 5.0 om with what looks like merc outdrive. Says cobra on rams. That is about all i have based on ebay listing.

Don't buy an OMC, they've been out of business for 12 years & it's getting hard to find parts (I'm shooting myself in the foot aren't I?)

renken's were made here in Charleston. They were rated below bayliners in the 90's

If you are looking for a project boat to work on that may be a good buy in the $1000-1400 range, likely the main engine coupler has failed due to engine out of alignment. possible cause of engine alignment issues on older boats can be rotten stringers or settled engine mounts. When they say it shifts fine, likely means it will shift F-N-R with engine off. Old Cobras are no different than old mercs; lots of cheap used parts around.

Motor, outdrive and trailer are worth 2K if sold separate in my opinion. If you want a boat to turn on and drive away, this is not likely it. If you can wrench it yourself, it may be a good buy, as it will need some work. I just bought a boat, and changed the coupler myself with a lift made of 4x4's and a automotive floor jack
