hello folks, i just installed a new set of LED trailer lights. boy are they bright and nice to look at.<br /><br />never actually had them in the water yet. my old lights were on the tops of my guide poles so as to not get them wet, but i got tired of corrosion from the salt water enviroment.<br /><br />is it really true that these led's are totally submersable and waterproof?!?!?!?<br /><br />i now have them mounted to the far edges of the trailer itself, so they will get submerged every time.<br /><br />mike

Re: led trailer lights

That's what I'm told, too, Mike. My buddy has had them on his trailer for 2 years and loves them. Freshwater use only, though. He is also the show director for a local show ski team and they have installed them on all of their boat trailers and not had one fail yet. I think they also put them on about 2 years ago.

Yup, I never unplug mine and they haven't burned out yet.

I put 'em on last year. They are the best! Never unplug them and never worry about them.

3 years and zero problems with mine...... dipped in brackish, fresh and salt water. <br /><br />Bondo, I use a little NYK-77 Corrosion Preventive Compound on my electrical contacts to eliminate the corrosion problems. Purchased it through a distributor for Truck-Lite Co. Inc.

Re: led trailer lights

Just wanted to share another use I came up with for these LED trailer lights.<br /><br />I am putting the LED orange clearance lights inside the boat as indirect lighting. (On the inside of the boat there is a place I can hide the lights so they provide indirect lighting to the deck.)<br /><br />I love them since they never burn out, the orange light looks very nice, and since they draw almost no power we can leave them on for hours while anchored and not drain the battery.<br /><br />Just wanted to share

And, if you are retrieving in the dark, you can have the trailer's LED lights on, underwater.<br /><br />It makes a cool effect, and helps you guide the boat onto the trailer.

Is this what is called "dielectric compound (or grease)? I just bought some silicone dielectric compound to goop up my trailer lights' socket connection.

Re: led trailer lights

I wired them to the trailer using heat shrink tubing. The contacts are fine, but after about a year using them in fresh and saltwater we noticed water inside the LED housing and LEDs failing. I had to take a small drill bit and drill a hole in the light to remove the water. The LEDS are nice , but mine were not water proof as advertised.

I just put mine on about a month ago, they have water in them. They are suppose to be waterproof.<br />They still work though. I don't know if I got a defective pair or what?

I thought I was the only one who'd done that. I've had red clerance lights inside the boat for 20 years. You can see OK while night fishing, and they don't take away your night vision.

Drill a hole in the bottom of the housing. It's apparent they are not waterproof anyway and standing water will not do them any good. A couple of 1/8" holes will let the water drain as soon as they fill up. My Daughters VW taillights would always fill up??? I drilled the little holes and no more standing water. (I know, you don't submerge VW lights, but they would fill up anyway.)

That's odd. In Hi-School we tested the theory on a few 'borrowed' VW's that they'd float.<br /><br />And they did too, but we never got them to where the tail lites were under, or filled with water.<br /><br />Except one. It floated off so far that we just had to shoot holes in it so it'd finally sink. <br /><br />Anyway:<br />I think you need to make sure # 1 daughter knows how to properly slam the door on her VW so it seals and latches down tight enough so that it can float properly.<br /><br />Then you can spend more time getting your boat in the water, and less time on trivial things like her car.

Re: led trailer lights

OK... I'm sold on LED's... but... how do you illuminate your license tag? Required in my state anyway. I've seen replacment LED lights in Wallyworld of about 6 bucks, but they dont have a "bottom light" for a tag! How about side markers? I go from fresh water in the summer to salt water in the winter and have to replace standard "innards" about every two years. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: led trailer lights

Try a truck (semi) parts shop. We have them on our rigs over here. Nice white LED, has hood and everthing to iluminate the number plate(licence tag) beautifully (just installed on friends UD last weekend) they are fuuly sealed too. Wire terminations are the only area that may let you down. Just try what some of the other have mentions here in regards to sealing the joint.

Re: led trailer lights

Does anyone sell a complete rewiring kit INCLUDING the yellow side markers? I've seen them all over the place for conventional lights but not for LEDs.
