I am new to this site and any help would be great. If anchored water comes in boat and when running bilge pump gets rid of it.When on trailer I plugged drain, airater and bilge holes and put in about 6 inches of water. No leaks from seams, rivets or any other place. How do I take out carpet and flooring to check hoses or whatever is next? When I get leaks fixed I want to replace seats and try to replace some flooring that's getting a little spongy.Than you.Bob

Re: Leak under flooring in 1987 Blue Fin

Bob, welcome to iboats! The floor on my Blue fin Sportsman was riveted to stringers. My floor was rotted pretty bad and I was able to pry up floor without any problem. Wood was destroyed as a result and I have nothing to use as templates. I'm not worried about it, but it is something to keep in mind and would make the process easier. The hose for my bilge was fractured into about 40 pieces. Have you checked hose for that and live well if you have one? What model boat and pictures are always helpful.

Sorry for lack of info.I do not have pics yet but it is a 1987 fish and ski.Boat has sliding vented doors to get to gas tanks and battery.Doors are riveted and screwed to flooring.Bilge pump and pump for live well are also back there ,below fooring.I am 67 years old and cannot even get far enough back there to see what hoses and pumps look like.Very small area!Do I have to take sliding doors out and then cut flooring to get to hoses to check them? Thanx Bob

Bilge pump hose is probably visible in that area, didn't have a live well on mine so I am not sure if yours is run under flooring or not. When I put one in I will be running it under floor. The track holding sliding doors in place is pretty simple to remove if you need to. Back out screws or drill out rivets. Don't know where your fuel tank is but if it is below floor be careful re-attaching track for doors as you could put an un-intended vent in the gas tank, that would be bad.

i'm of the feeling that if you can't access an area to see what's what, you start taking stuff apart until you can get to where you want and see what you need to see.

Sounds like a plan. The hose for live well from pump and drain hose from live well to back of boat are under floor.I have two portable six gallon gas tanks so no problem there. My question now is how wide are stringers where floor is attached? My plan is to peel back carpet and cut flooring about two feet in back of boat.If problem is there --hoses or pumps great.Repair or replace. If not ,cut flooring in front of boat and replace hoses.Does this sound like it might work?

That would be pretty close to my plan.

You may not need to roll the carpet back, the decking may be screwed down through the carpet... but then again the decking may be screwed down with carpet on top.

I wouldn't cut any decking, remove the full size pieces. Cutting the decking will leave weak joints in the deck when you replace it, if you can reuse the decking.

You'll probably find that your hoses are buried in the expanding floatation foam and will have to be dug out... but then again there may not be any foam because someone before you removed it.

You just never know what you're going to find when you open up these old boats. I would be nice if the bottoms of them were littered with gold coins when you open them up, but it's usually the opposite... they're littered with crap instead of gold.

Removing the decking is the only way to find out what's going on in the bilge. It could be that rodents have chewed hoses, or it could be that a previous owner didn't know what he was doing when he tried to make a repair... both are very common.

BTW, does your speedometer work on this boat? I ask because rats and mice like to chew on the speedo pitot tube and if the tube is broken it will put water in the bilge only when the boat is underway, I've seen problem a few times too.

I agree about not cutting deck. Try to get out section by removing screws or drilling rivets. They were pretty skimpy on the fasteners on mine. May be cramped with splashwell still in boat, but should come out. They ran my decking from side to side, if yours is same you should be taking out a piece that is 4 foot by whatever width or beam of the boat is. Again if floor is in bad shape and you can get it out relatively whole you will have a decent template to make new piece from if needed.
