Sinister
I will find out today or tomorrow.
It looks like the way I launch will depend on where I launch from and boat configuration

I will take some pictures of the new launch site by my house that I just use for trying things out on the boat.

I have the same ones. Do you just lift the boat by the front d ring to wheel it to the water? I didn't know if it would be to much stress lifting it there.

Re: launching wheels

Yes
Everybody lifts the boat with the front D ring.
A few of us are experimenting with using kayak carts for the Bow for longer distances.

You have 4 wheels then.

Re: launching wheels

I have the same boatstogo wheels i got a deal on amazon. when pulling the point i feel like i am about to lose my fingers so pulling it by the front d ring has to end asap. If the kayak dolly doesnt work i will be gluing 2 handles in the front.

Re: launching wheels

I wrap a rag around the front d-ring as it hurts my hand otherwise. I bought some of these pins for the bottom 2 holes and they work SO much better than the pins that come with the wheels. I kinda rounded off the end so they were easier to insert as well.
You have to get the right size which I dont think my link is...came 2 to a pack

Re: launching wheels

Got my launching wheels yesterday. What do you guys use to seal the holes you have to drill? Anything special other than silicone? Seems the valve is hard to reach with a gauge. I used a bike pump to pump them up, but I couldn't get a good seal so the gauge wasn't working to let me know how much psi I filled them to. Any tricks to get to the stem to inflate these and or test them with a gauge?

For sealing through holes in the transom:

Lexel works good, that is what I used.
It is relatively easy to remove
if you ever decide to disassemble,
should last at least 5 or 10 years,
probably will exceed the life of the vinyl.

if you use 3M 5200, it will be considered
more of a permanent bond
( I've used this stuff for more than marine applications )
( works great to repair ratty old cross country ski boots )
( motorcycle seat, pin hole in drive shaft boot, etc... )
( let your imagination run wild )
3M's 4200 is also great stuff, the bond is not consider as
permanent as the 5200 though.

Sikaflex 291 (of which I have no experience )
or similar is also recommended by many mariners

like a lot of solutions,
it is usually best to go with whatever you can get
the easiest / quickest and still looks like it will do
the job

--------------

for lifting by the D-Rings, there was a set of those
exercise bands around the house that no one is using,
(pair of handles and a couple -3 different bands )
from which the handles snap into the d-rings and
have a rather comfortable grip to lift by
LiftHandlesForTheD-Rings.jpg

the whole kit was $13 or $14 from Walmart,
so I am sure we could find similar handles
somewhere else for maybe 5 or 6 big ones
or less

alternately, you could make your own bow
lift handles with a carbiner, some webbing
straps ( do not know if I'd trust those side
release buckles, I'd probably sew them in
a loop), and either a piece of PVC pipe or
automotive water heater hose (or similar)
for the handles )

--------------

@Ronald J
&
@Sinistre1
I hope one of you guys can post some detailed photos
of how you attach the bow wheels, still have not ordered
a set for myself.

Re: "...and actually had it been made so that the "deep vee" bar was on top,..."

they are a couple - 10 bucks more,
but I'll probably get a set like these guys
when I finally get my order in.

--------------

for inflation,
initially, I used a cheapie Coleman Rechargeable Quick Pump
(model 3 2000000834) adapted into my hand pump's hose,
once the Coleman can do no more, I top off to the specified
PSIs with the hand pump. Over the winter, I got another hose
and inflator fitting so I can now use both pumps simultaneously.

as it is, I am at about 20 - 25 minutes to build out and inflate
the boat ( with aluminum floor ) however, by the time I unpack
everything, build out the boat, get the motor on and all the gear
in the boat, and make that last trip back and forth to the car,
I generally figure about an hour upon arrival at the launch site
to the time I am actually underway...

eventually I'll get one of the Bravo pumps that has been recommended
on these forums, I think I even saw a link once to one for around $110
BTW, these Bravos can pump up to about 15 psi, which should be just
enough pressure for the launch wheels.

my Halkey-Roberts style fitting has the air pressure gauge fitted to it.
Yes, it is a bit difficult to read when inflating the keel tube.

Also of note, I cross checked the accuracy of the gauge that came
with my boat versus an automotive vacuum / boost diagnostics gauge,
and it is way off ( reads 3.6 psi when the diag. gauge reads 5.2 psi ).
So I put calibration marks on the clear plastic cover and go by them
instead of the numbers below the dial (and check the calibration when
ever it is not too troublesome).

to keep my launch wheels up to pressure, I have an air compressor
and one of the dual chucks (like the truckers use).
DualChuckTireInflatorWithGauge_14014.jpg
works great and being I have seen 3 gallon "pancake" & "hotdog" tank
air compressors & etc @ HFT for $40 or $60,
$_35.JPG 97080_zzz_500.jpg
of (if nothing else) which I recommend having one
if you have the space in your shop
as they are a much better value than
the hand pumps they want $40 for at your local bicycle boutique.

--------------

@cablebandit

I picked up the 20 piece pto pin kit from HFT when it was 1/2 off
( the set of Transom Launch Wheels I built up required 4 pins )
20 Piece PTO Pin Assortment
even at 8.80, with that 20% additional off coupon they have been
flooding the weekend papers with, $7 is not bad, and if you can get
20% off of $6, even better

if you have the wrong size, just chase the hole out with a larger drill bit

Re: launching wheels

Does anybody know where to get these from.
You need to always have some as it seems they are easily lost if your full attention is not given to properly attaching them image.jpg

I would also like some additional sizes as it seems they would be perfect for use with the Bimini top poles

Harbor freight sells a kit with various sizes, or tractor supply. Lowes or Home Depot should also carry them.

Most farm equipment dealers or other farm retail stores carry bunches of those in many sizes.

Re: launching wheels

HFT, if close by is the way to go, the 20 piece assortment can generally be had on sale or via coupon for ~$6.
Otherwise they are a $2 or $3 affair each. 20 Piece PTO Pin Assortment
HFT_20-Piece_PTO_Pin_Kit.jpg

Get some bungee cord of about the same diameter as that used for the tarp tie down loops with the ball ends.
image_16973[1].jpg
It is easy to slip the cord between where the retainer spring wire touches itself and then just attach the other
end to the struts or something. My launch wheel setup requires 2 PTO pins per side and even since I just attached
the uppers and lowers to each other on each side, I have not lost any PTO pins.

You could also just use some sting or anything similar.

'had the camera out today taking photos of under used stuffs
to put on craigslist to get my spring purge underway,
'figured I would snap a shot of how I use the shock / bungee
cord to retain the PTO Pins to one another
and hopefully provide more clarity

Figured out if in the up position and just put the pin in the hole and wrap the wire retainer around the upright and then sucure it to the pin it lets the wheels angle back . Gives quite a bit more elbow room in the stern.

sweet!!!

I finally sold enough under utilized stuffs via craigslsist
and had enough left over "moolah", not allocated to ohter things,
that I went ahead and ordered the canoe / kayak dolly
that folds parallel to how the wheels roll:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Canoe-Kayak-Dolly-Carrier-Cart/221295553458
fetch

They should arrive by the middle of next week, so I hope by Friday morning
to have some photos of them in application as the bow wheels for my SIB
to post on here.

The same seller also had the launch wheels pictured below
of which, I think I saw similar launch wheels mentioned in another thread on launch wheels,
I like the way they fold up against the rear / outside of the transom,
Being made of nylon, I would not expect they are as robust as the really nice ones
constructed of stainless / metal I have seen elsewhere on the web.
But for the price they do not look bad at all...

Has anyone had any experience with them?
Any good or bad experiences / things to say?

I have the Kayak cart also. The problem I had with it is the wheels. They are smaller than the transom wheels , but they look just like them. Unfortunately they don't perform just like them. I wound up having to replace the inner tubes in mine and now life is good. I do like having the option to use the cart or the transome wheels. Depending on distance I can even see using both

Finally tired out this style of kayak / canoe wheels
and they are totally inadequate, the tubing immediately bent
and then the entire assembly went flopping over
( and I had totally reffed down the attachment straps )

I wish I had tried them out soon, as I may have had more
to go back to work something out with the seller.
Oh well, I will write to the and see if they are willing to help

if the tubing is the same type / gauge used for those $80
transom launch wheels, I am very glad I made my own
transom wheels using 1/8" walled aluminum stock

oh well, worst case,
I paid $50 for a couple of plastic friction bearing pneumatic wheels
that are worth maybe a couple of bucks each
and I can now start figuring out how to fabricate some sort
of functional bow wheels around them
