Late 80's Mariner 40hp steering--->tiller conversion?

Hi all,
I have been given an old bowrider with a 1989 (I think) Mariner 40hp and a newish trailer. I am considering getting a 16-18 ft tin boat and converting the motor to a tiller. Is this possible - does anyone have any experience with this type of thing?

You may find the parts required to transform you motor costlier than a replacement motor.
