Are there any kind of I.D. numbers or Markings of any kind on lower units I have a 78 115hp V4 and I'm shopping around for a lower unit. The problem is that they all look pretty much the same. buying used off of Craigslist is enough of a gamble. I would hate to buy one that wasn't compatible. Any info on how to identify a lower unit that is not bolted to a motor would be much appreciated.

Sorry ----Too far away for me to help you.----There is a 6 digit casting number on that housing.-----Most experienced shops would be able to help you I think.----Put a hundred gearcases on a pile and I think I could pick out one to fit a 78 model 115 HP.

Here is my motor (115ETL78C) and the lower unit I got off of Craigslist. The guy said it was off of a 1978 150hp Johnson ( or so he was told by whoever sold it to him) He told me he bought it to use on his motor (175849C), an evinrude , but it "wouldn't work... The two lower units look the same to me. What do you think?

Picture #2 shows an oil pressure shift assisted lower unit.----It goes into FORWARD with a DOWN motion of the shift rod.-----Your motor likely shifts to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod.-----You are right they all look the same to a novice.----But they are not all the same !!------And I say that lower unit in picture # 2 would be off a 1976 or 1977 model.

This is motor is new-to-me and so is the old bass boat that it 's mounted on. I've taken it to the lake twice. It runs, but there are definitely some issues. The biggest being that it "clunks" hard when going into forward gear. The second is that it won't idle properly. I don't even like to start it with muffs on because it revs up so high. As I read more and more about these V4 crossflow motors it is apparent that there is a problem with my remote controls and/or the linkage on the motor. This is my first motor over 50hp and the only other johnson I have any experience with is a 1964 9.5hp. and that was quite a bit different then this 115 V4

The trouble shooting on these V-4 motors starts with a compression test.----Post your numbers.
