Anyone know where I can get a large pair of long reach circlip players to remove the double rings in the bottom of Johnson Evinrude triple lower units?

everywhere I go only has the small ones.

None of the automotive supply houses around have them this hefty

thanks

your local snapon dealer.

I bought the bluepoint version.
Would you know how long your pliers are roughly?

I bought a large convertible pair at local local supply house. But they’re too clunky to get in to the housing. The handle design doesn’t allow for enough operation either

The 2 pliers that I have ( one with extension tip for 68 models ) are very big and long.-----Too far away from them to measure today.

Knipex makes great pliers for a reasonable cost, but I have no idea what size you need.

about 16" long (they are at home).

I have some gear wrench double-x ones that have good reach, however nowhere near as heavy duty as the bluepoints.

you need this one at a minimum.

may as well get this one too https://shop.snapon.com/product/Interchangeable-Tip/External-Retaining-Ring-Pliers-(Blue-Point)/PR8A

Thanks Scott. If I was doing these all the time, I’d invest in those but this is probably a one or 3 time thing. I’ve found a long cheap pair at our version of grizzly tools. $25...think I’ll try those 1st

Uh yup, seeing why. I was at it a few hours last night making tips for a $25 tool I bought. Ended up in tip failure. I had to make the tips really long to reach the holes that are right tight to the housing wall. The shaft won’t allow me to angle the pliers back. Such a beefy ring.
I’m giving up but only for now. This unit will get new seals only, hoping gears and clutch dog are ok. Going to try it anyway. In the meantime, I’m going to beef up my plier tips with a larger diameter grade 12 bolts ground to a smaller tip so I can mess around with a spare unit.

McMaster-Carr.------Has them at $72.00 each I believe.
Is this the one you use?
It looks similar to the Snap On pliers that Scott posted. But those are $250-ish. by the time they are converted to CDN.

I’m concerned the ratchet mechanism won’t allow the pliers to go deep enough in the housing. I can’t afford to buy and try over and over.

Hurry to a shop.---Takes couple of minutes to take those out.----Maybe buy a jug of oil from them !!
I would, but my local place is a gong-show. They were bought out by a lawn equipment dealer that thinks they can be a marine shop. I can’t even get fuel things like rated zip ties, 5/32 hose or basic things they should have on hand. It’s not just me, their google review are terrible.

closest other shops are 45mins to an hour away.
and we are in full covid lockdown again.

out she goes. Times up on this one. The water test will have to tell. I need to get onto another project waiting

but still, I’d like to know if you use those exact McMaster Carr pliers. I will order them for the next refresh and to mess with this spare unit
