i have a 3.0 mercruser with alpha 1 outdrive i have been reading about freeze plugs when i bought my boat i was shown 2 both on the right side of the motor if you are in the boat looking at it i was wondering if that is all,also i was told to take them out after use. Is this correct?

the two plugs you are referring to are most likely the drain plugs for the block and manifold, brass pipe threaded plugs with 7/16" hex heads - these are for draining the block/mainfold primarily for winterizing purposes

freeze plugs are not even freeze plugs, they are core plugs for casting purposes; here is some more info:

A little FYI... The right side of the boat is the Starboard side. The left is PORT. Just remember the word Port and the word LEFT both have 4 letters in it. We like nautical terms here LOL !

Port, Port is wine, wine is red, red is port. I believe I used that in a post yesterday also. Maybe I can find a post tommorow also, and get the triple play. Is there a trophy for that? LOL

the plugs are part of the winterising process as already stated.if water does not come out of either a small pointed implement may be required to clear any blockages from the underside of the manifold as this regularly gets rust and crud in.if freezing conditions are likely get the water out in these two areas at least.you do not have to remove them until closer to the winter unless curious.

If you're asking if you should take the drain plugs out after each use - the answer is NO, unless you're operating in freezing conditions - then yes.

When I get drunk I tend to fall to the left, which would be port. hehe
