Certainly not trying to hi-jack this thread, but I do have one question for others about such updates. How did you all figure out the number of can lights to use in your updated kitchens? I am trying to read a lot about that and seems every thread has something different to say about it. :noidea:

I installed 4 and it was plenty in my 10x10 kitchen, plus i also installed above and under cabinet lighting, makes a world of difference! Last house i had installed undercabinet lights and loved it, however they were xenon lights and used to damn near cook the food in the cabinet, this house i went with led tape and would never go back, mind you, my kitchen remodel was a total gut job, including walls and ceiling, so running wires for all the different lights was super simple, even added speakers!!!

Yes, I have under cabinet LED lights too. I have had an issue with some of the tape lights out there. They fail after a while. Mine were expensive and came in pre made housings but they are great.

I basically decided to go with at least four LED can lights because we presently have four 2 foot long, two tube florescent lights in there now, for a total of 8 florescent 2 foot tubes. So each light now has 40 watt florescent abilities. But that is where the issues starts. If you try to do a conversion from florescent lighting to LED lighting, you get so many different views all over the web. Then comes the formulas. I can easily do their math, but it varies so much that how do you seriously know you are getting enough light? I also thought about using 6 LED can lights, but again what lumens and how big in diameter? So confusion sets in easily. The kitchen measures 10' by 12' with no windows. And that is because on each end of the kitchen we have rooms with very large 6' x 6' windows that allow some sun shine in to help. But no direct sun in the kitchen. So does anybody know how to do such conversions to the number of lights AND the diameters and lumens needed? Obviously there will be under cabinet lighting as well, but don't want that to change the typical ceiling light setup. Any ideas?

Just some I bought off eBay. I use them in my office at home so they are on MANY hours per day. Almost every LED chip is at about 1/4 brightness now. They are mounted to a piece of aluminum so they have a good heatsink.

Getting ready to paint the new cabinets and the old ones. I don't think I've posted up but we found a local guy that seems to be awesome which in the small town is not the usual. I went with having boxes made for above the current and he is making new doors that will cover both so looks like one giantly tall cabinet. The fit is awesome. I purchased a light commercial stove vent - with remote fan that will be located in the attic so really quiet - that he is currently custom making a box for. Plus one over the sink where we did not have one before. I'll put up pics later. Paint grade poplar, good plywood no fake wood. Unfinished but sanded and soft close hinges on all will be coming in around $1800. I'm very happy with that.

So we tested our colour and application method on our spare bathroom vanity base. We used oil with flo/pen etrol. Worked great but I was doing in the garage in the winter so took a day or two before I could recoat. Plus it was oil.

I've been told the new latex 'enamels' are just as good as oil, with the benefit of being latex. This is kitchen cabinets, i'm tough on a kitchen.

If I were to spray cabs, it'd probably be w oil, if it'd dry and recoat in a reasonable period of time.

Here, this month, I'd probably want to use latex, its just so humid, unusually so, I'd be concerned about the oil drying to recoat AND curing before handling or hanging.....

If you're spraying, I wonder if you could add hardener too if you're using Penetrol. That'd help w dry time.

Woodonglass should have some helpful cab painting tips

don't think I showed yall this, when doing the wall I decided to add a charging station and a 'guest' location for when friends come over we all put phones up. This is on the right side of the new no wall area.

Took a couple old windows from Craigslist and replace glass with flat galvanized form Home Depot. Combo of pics on foam with magnetic tape and a complete magnetic frame around the pic. Honestly cannot remember how I came up with this idea but the wife sure loves it. A couple piano hinges, cutting out the drywall in between the studs, rocking in and all that. Add two outlets of 4 USB each some hooks for keys and ....

We painted our kitchen cabinets with a high quality latex paint (Sherwin Williams) and it has not held up as well as an oil based paint would. There are clear wear marks around the most-used door and drawer pulls. I have heard of some folks improving the wearability of latex in the kitchen by topcoating with several coats of clear, water-based polyurethane (which is totally clear, not yellowish like an oil-based urethane). Too late for us to try that, though.

Despite all you hear about the new improved latex paints, for some applications I still think oil-based is superior. This would be one of those times, I think.
