I have a 1977 Merc 888 with the Ford 302 V8 raw water cooled. It is overheating under load. I found my fresh water supply hose inside the bell housing kinked. How can this be replaced and is it a special Merc part?
Mine looks like standard NAPA 1/2" black hose. thanks.

Re: Kinked water hose

ya should probably use the correct mercruiser hose. the hose aint that expensive, but it sure is hard to get to for replacement.
ya should probably read the service manual for the exact R&R method. but basically. ya remove the drive, remove the shift cable on the inside shift plate, remove the driveshaft bellows on the fore side. remove or pull the bellhoseing off or out of the way. then you'll be able to kinda get your hand in there to put the new hose on the pipe going through the gimble houseing. i sliced the old hose off. then i used a heat gun and a cone and pliers and screwdrivers to help make the inside hose dia. of the new hose big enough to go all the way onto the nipple. if ya got any other items in need of repair in that area. this is the time to do it.. your gonna be right there...
fwiw. i think the service manual says to put the hose on the bellhousing first, then the gimble houseing. i found it easier to put the new hose on the gimble houseing side first. less chance of a new kink. i found this out the hard way. i R&Red that hose and it kinked the first time. 2nd time was much better. mostly i think because i stretched out the hose prior to install + putting it on the gimble houseing side first seems to leave no load (twist) on the hose leading towards a kink.

Re: Kinked water hose

Got my intake hose off. Someone before me must have used a hose thats too long and when the outdrive is all the way down, it kinks the hose. The guy at the Merc parts place told me the length is critical. Does anyone know the recommended length of 5/8" hose on a 888 outdrive? Can the braided marine hose be used for this application? thanks.

Re: Kinked water hose

here's a link to an old thread that might help.. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=286068&highlight=water+hose+length+revisited
i do think i ended up going with 13 3/4. like i said. get the oem hose so it's right quality hose the first time. trust me, you don't want to do it twice like i did...
that hose number is the number for the hose that goes between the gimble assy. and up to the tstat. area. it's the same quality hose as the one that goes between the gimble housing and the bellhouseing. you'll get three gimble to bell housing lengths out of it. i still have one length left for future use..
or i would certainly trust a number put up by dons too. i've looked up the hose number for the long one i used recently, within the last 4 months anyways and it appears good best i could see, i only assume that the number dons used is still good, i never looked into it as i already had the hose purchased..

thanks Ziggy. I cant believe I got it together..I replaced the exhaust bellows while I was in there...seemed impossible. Worked on it before I read your link but think I am close the the 13 or 14 spec. Trimmed all the way down its not kinked but I am going to keep an eye on it. Gerry in Michigan
