Today I noticed a tv commercial that advertised "back to school" deals on new cell phones. This kinda thing is one of the reasons the teachers have to spend time taking cell phones away from kids at school. You see cell phones have nothing to do with school and all this "back to school" crap about cell phone deals seem to imply that cell phones are included with having new pencils and paper.LOL not so. the rules at my wifes school say that any cell phone seen or heard by a teacher is to be taken away right then. Back to school my arse!

Maybe its aimed towards college kids? I always use my cell phone in school even though it is not allowed. You just have to know which teachers really dont care and how to not get caught by the ones who do care.

Haha, I probably couldn't survive day of high school without my cell phone. I find that as long as the ringer is off and it's not out during a test teachers are starting to care less and less every year. Don't know how you older guys managed to pull it off.

We actually learned something while in school. I feel sorry for the kids today. Peer pressure keeps them from learning and our government keeps loading up the debt on them. Poor kids.

Folks need to not leave their responsibilities for others to manage, they ought not to gripe about the way the teachers are raising their kids.

Many parents want their kids to have a cell phone so they can contact them during the day.
Many kids want them so they can contact anyone but their parents during the day.

I really doubt whether schools "banning" them will have much effect. They'd be better off establishing specific rules for their use.

I have no idea how us older folks managed to survive school without cellphones. Somehow we did, though. Amazing!

Well, if you are fine with missing the information, and more importantly in missing on developing study/listening habits - why should the teacher care? So long as you are not disrupting class, you only affect yourself.

In the "old days", people passed around notes. Or they daydreamed. Or, in my case, we read science fiction (smaller book inside textbook). Where there's a will, there's a way to slack. That much has not changed...

But I paid for that - not so much because of what I did or didn't learn in the lower grades, but for not developing good study habits. That bit me real good when I got into college...

Begin Rant Having been a cell phone user since 1991.....I've finally had enough. The plans are nonsense, the cost is ridiculous and the service in my area is terrible. I dumped it in the trash after I got a call from a nationwide pizza outfit while I was parked outside their door waiting for my kid to come out of an adjacent store. The caller gave me the address to their closest store...........yep..it was the one where I was parked. My understanding is that they plug in the GPS location of their stores and any phones close by will get a call. That, my friends, is too much for me. Neither one of my two older kids got cell phones until they left high school. At the risk of ticking a few people off, IMHO, they should be hard wired into vehicles and hands free. There should be no ability for the driver to text, read emails etc. It's bad enough with the volume of traffic these days without having even more distracted drivers out there. Even though I run my own business...I found the thing more of a nuisance than it was worth. Rant over.

Kev, the heart of what you said is what a lot of us feel and believe. Amen.

As I drive down the road (not now, I'm at home), I watch other drivers looking down at their laps, they're not reading sci-fi novels. And, what gives advertisers the right to call my phone. I bought the phone and pay for the service. Why are they advertising on it?

Kids have enough distractions. They're in school to focus on learning. And, I agree the social networking is part of that learning. But, in class, they need to focus on the topic at hand.

Parents who feel the need to be in constant contact with their kids, stop! Trust them to do the right thing and be a parent when they're home, talk to your kids person to person, not through an electronic leash.

Our children never had cell phones. We never had cell phones. We all survived just fine.
Ban and confiscate in schools in my opinion. Soon straighten them all out and save the parents a fortune !!!

Cell phones are just what they were called. A electronic leash. My wife has always been able to reach me at the bar, (even though she didn't for sure know where I was). It is dang aggrivating !!!!!

New rule: I let it go to voice mail !!!!
