I recently got a new boat that was such an amazing deal I did not both to start it since even if the motor did not work it was still a steal. So today I was trying to see if the starter would go and the key on the controls will not turn at all. Any ideas on what might causing this? Would like to try everything before replacing it. There is no rust and it is in great condition. The motor is a 77 merc 85 best I can figure.

Do you have the right key?...There are like 4 different key combo's for the Merc controller....take the boat by a Merc dealer and see if the have the right key.

Sure sounds like you haven't got the correct key for that ignition switch. However, if you can get the proper key in short order, just buy a new ignition switch and change it out. They rally don't cost that much... JHO!

Sometimes the key will go in either way if the ignition is wore out. Mine does, Won't turn if in wrong. Yeah I have to replace mine too. But when in properly a little jiggle crank's her over.

When I was a kid we could start the boat with a screw driver and it worked with most mercs. Is there not an easy way to hot-wire the boat? Keep in mind I can be dangerous with a little knowledge, LOL.

Thinking about my last post... I am in no way saying to use a screw driver. Just saying we did that as kids, would never to that with mu current boat :nono:

Thanks looks like mine is worn out too. Flipped the key over and it worked after a few tries learning the motor.
