Re: Final adjustments

Thanks SeaRider for clarifying everything and answer all my questions!

At this point the timing has been checked many times and i am 100 percent sure its set at 25 degree's, At first i was a bit unsure of where to check in reference to the mating surface but now i understand! so all along i guess my motor did come with 25 degree timing and max cam positioning on carb throttle. I only had to change gasket ($8) :D

I think I have got the motor riding at the perfect height in the water.. Motor has amazing hole shot, no prop ventilation at all, handles good, motor gets good water for cooling and gives the best speed! I'm actually thinking of using a big piece of aluminum instead of a wood shim but not to sure yet, I will have to see if i have a piece of aluminum at my work. The shim's on the back of the boat that trim the motor to 90 degree's are going to be made out of wood and painted black like the motor!

about the clamps, I am planning on hooking them together with rope like you said. The one on the left side has a motor lock on it which makes it impossible to face the hooks towards each other but a rope should be fine, I check the clamps everyday anyways to make sure they have not come loose :). I'm sure glad the transom cap is there as it kinda stops the motor from coming off the top and still has a couple mm's of room between the bottom and the clamps so i will not need to use a dremel on it! I was thinking the same thing and that's what I do I just throttle back so the rpm's are to high when i'm by myself with occasional burst of wot just for some excitement!

Thanks

Re: Final adjustments

Very pleased to read it's working as expected, the performance difference is oustanding, with you alone and well trimed out don't need to ballance your weight forward, just full throttle and that boat will jump into plane. If you can't get to match both eyeclamps facing each other because won't adjust any further against transom, could place 1/2mm round plastic, rubber pieces under clamps and keep adjusting untill both eyes face each other, clamps will lock perfectly. Don't forget to drop lube with car oil 10/30-20/50 all rotating parts, will rotate better and last longer than rotating dry.

Re: just bought my new mercury sea pro (Tohatsu M25) and have a question about timing

I too just purchased a 2011 Mercury Sea Pro 25 from Canada. After some issues with getting it running initially, I now have it on my 18' work skiff and it runs like a champ. I am also looking into upgrading it to a 30 hp by changing the gasket between the carb and engine block. I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can give a definitive answer on. What is the actual gasket name and part number (I have 346-02011-0)? Where can I get one, is it a Tohatsu part or a Merc. part? Do I get parts in general from Tohatsu and if so what model number/year is the correct Toahatsu one to use? Where can I get a service manual for the Sea Pro? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Final adjustments

I just read and seen your edit where you put "you are quite knowledgeable on what you're doing...(thumbs up)" thanks :), Thats what a lot of people say especially because im only 16!

yea the boat jumps right out of the hole now! love this little motor it performs much better after gasket change to! now about the clamps. I would do your idea but the way my motor lock is designed it is not possible i will post pics!

One more question is it's officially time to do the 10hr service and I just want to make sure I do everything, let me know if i have everything on the list. change L/U oil , lube prop shaft, clean fuel filter, change plugs/clean if still good and check gap, apply grease to all moving parts and grease fittings, check for any loose bolts and clean whole motor. if im missing anything let me know. thanks

Hi dmartindell welcome to the forums and congrats on buying an awesome motor!

the gasket between the carb and reed valve assembly I believe is called the carb mounting gasket not fully sure though. I do not know the part number, I would just call your local Tohatsu/Nissan dealership and they will look it up in the computer and order it. The gasket I ordered was for a 2003 Tohatsu 30hp it was $8.50 . I think you can even order it for the 2011 30hp merc it doesn't really matter these are all late 90's motor's made this year! here's the 30: http://www.mercurymarine.com.au/home/outboards/twostroke/-30-hp---25-hp.aspx
As for where to get a service manual i'm not sure probably from the merc dealership. Also make sure to check your timing, just because mine is 25 doesnt mean yours is. hope this helps!!

Re: just bought my new mercury sea pro (Tohatsu M25) and have a question about timing

Nathan,

Generally don't change gear oil at 10 hour service, because will out inmaculate clean, but change if you preffer, can clean plugs with acrylic thinner or carb spary, check gap, must be 1.0 mm tight gapped. Plugs cleaned every 50 metered worked hours can last as long as 150 hours if boating frequent all year round, if not, can change every 100 hours. That's the nice issue about having a installed hour/tach meter.

Can clean big filter inside engine, check if with fuel debris, contamination, E fuel residue issues, grease prop shaft, probably factory well greased, oil, grease accordingly. Get yourself a small/medium painting brush, squirt some W40 on brush and paint entire engine, reapply untill all interior engine is done, it's the economic way of not flushing engine with W40 if directly sprayed with nozzle.

Dmartindale, just buy Tohatsu 30 HP gasket at any dealer, code 345020110M (Carburator Gasket) if Paul shows up can buy a service manual from him along carb gasket. Yes check magneto timing as some engines are being delivered with 20? timing.

I know I wouldn't normally do it that often, I am only doing it to follow 10hr break in and just so i know it's done. Usually I do it every year or around 50 hrs. for the plugs the Tohatsu website states 2 types of plugs : (NGK B7HS-10 or BR7HS-10) what's the difference? and whats in my motor from factory? Reason I ask is I will just grab some from my work as it will be free than I will just have the old ones a spares!

One other thing I was thinking about today was: some people on the forum's say run the carb dry everyday but I never do this. and if any of my engine's sits for a long time I just use fuel stabilizer but never run dry as it's bad to do to a 2 stroke, running out of fuel=running out of oil=bad! What do you think?

The R is for resistance, it comes from the factory with them as it is required in Canada, always run it dry as the engine will not run without fuel so the idea that you are running the engine without oil is retarded.

Nathan,

When both type of plugs are not available, as an emergency could use B7HS, but will need to be regapped to 1.0 mm as comes factory gapped to 0.7 mm. You can change first tail oil at 50 meterd hours, and then every 100 hours, can use 80/90 multigrade, or 90 fixed grade automotive gear oil. Running carb dry no issues at all, but if you boat on a daily basis no need to, only if stopping that horse for more days, you are already using gasoline mixed with oil, engine will be properly lubricated untill engine dies and anyway, you are at idle speed.

Thanks guys for the info about the carb and plugs! I never run the carb dry right now because i use ethanol free gasoline and fuel stabilizer but i will start doing that! right now i use 87 are there any advantages to using 94 octane? also do i use mineral or synthetic in the L/U? Thanks :D

Any decent 90 EP is fine for the LU. Synthetics are OK, but not required. Do not use Type C.

Some... Some premium fuels may have better or more detergents and or stabilizers. But the motor does not need any more than 87 octane.

Try both octane and see if you can find any performance difference, some swears no difference at all, some swears there's quite a difference, boaters opinions are divided.

Ok thanks Tohatsu Guru , pvanv and Sea Rider! will try different octane and see if i get better fuel economy or performance if not i will stick with 87 and occasionally use higher !

Well I tried 94 octane and I do believe that the motor is idling better and possibly a bit better performance overall. I may try 91 to see if the performance is the same as 94. Thanks guys!

Definitely 91 is better than 87, post if you find 91 has less better idle, acceleration, wot performance compared to 94. Just for the record as there will always be divided opinions.
