I bought a mariner 82 model 70hp, and the ignition key wont turn over, there is voltage in the ignition switch.

i read in the manual that there is a start switch, although i cant find it, and would this stop the ignition switch from turning it on.

also the rectifer is another thing i cant locat on the motor and would this stop the motor from being started also.

i can use screwdrive on the 2 bolts on the stater solenoid and it start though.

Try hot wiring at the switch to confirm you have a bad switch.

Follow the yellow wires from the stator should lead you to the rectumfrier.

A test light or volt meter will help you sort this out.

First, check the fuse located near the starter relay to be sure the ignition switch has 12 V on the Red wire.

Have a helper hold the key in the start position and check for 12 V to the starter relay trigger wire, yellow with a thin red line.

If 12 V replace the relay.

If NO volts then test the same yellow W/red line on the ignition switch, it should show 12 V when turned to start, if none replace the switch, if 12 V then check the Starter lock-out switch in the control box. this switch is on that same yellow/red wire and only makes contact when in Neutral.
