Re: Just bought a 1977 Evinrude 75hp.....need help

I'm currently running a 13 1/2 X 17P prop. It's in almost new condition.

I'm going to have to pop the cowling to see if the throttle arm is actually moving as soon as I start moving the control lever. The motor seemed pretty snappy when I mashed the throttle(on the water), so I'll be surprised if this is a link & sync issue.

I ran the motor WOT quite a bit while we were cruising around, to blow out any 'cobwebs' in the carbs etc. This motor def sips gas in comparison to my '67 Johnson.

The fact that I got my '67 80hp up to 31mph(with a 10" prop)....and 75hp only got up to 33mph(with the 17" prop) tells me that my new(to me) motor has more speed to give. In hindsight, I wish I had marked my prop today to check for slippage. There were no obvious signs of slippage, but I'd like to be sure.

My service manual should be here tomorrow(assuming the idiot mailman doesn't deliver it to my neighbor).

my experiance is that you diconnect the throttle cable make sure you sync is the way you want it and adjust the cable to fit, then link the throttle cable....this gives you just a little bit of adjustment room to make things tight. I watched your vids you have a good bit of slop on your throttle control, I did too first 3 cylinder looper I had, took alot of pounding into my head not to adjust the cable after my carbs were in sync... I think I miss stated it should be sync then link. Oh anyway the after market manuals suck on this part. I had to set down at my buddys shop and read his OMC manual to get my tuning skills in order...LOL

I found out $$ that all 17p aluminum props were not created equal but that turning point prop gives alot of push to my 70 at the expence of RPM's

Keep in mind the motor will have to engage forward or reverse gear first before any actual throttle movement can be seen.....there will be nothing at the throttle plates until this happens.

Damn service manual won't be here til Monday. It was shipped "economy mail" by mistake. Somehow it's going to take 6 days to get from Massapequa, NY to Syracuse NY!

The seller was nice enough to offer to send pics from the manual(he had other copies) regarding the link & sync...and also from the controls.

According to what I've read so far, there is a 45 degree shifting radius when shifting into forward/reverse...so I'm guessing that explains why it takes the control lever so much travel to start affecting the throttle. I still think I'm going to have to adjust the length of my cables a bit though.

I'm going to check a few basic things with the 'link&sync' (cam follower start point, etc), but am not going to do much more til I physically get the manual in my hands.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a timing light and learn how to use it...cause I'll need to confirm timing with a timing light.

Don't get ahead of your self by guessing, And NO way, there's not suppose to be all of that travel in the throttle before responce from the engine,....think about that:confused: what purpose would that serve?, it's just what I said it was, review earlier post. A well tune power pilot and engine is as responsive as a mothers arms. you have to get your mind around the sync proccedure to see it.

my setup starts effecting throttle timing a hair after gear engagenemt followed immediatly by throttle butterfly movement, I can make my engine lope at low idle with just tiny pressure back and forth on the power pilot, I use the throttle to make minor adjustments in the no wake zones so it has to be responsive at all settings...it was designed to be.

here is all the johnson manual you need

I def didn't plan on guessing on anything. From what I've read, I should be able to handle the link& sync, but I'm going to wait til I read the manual thoroughly before I dive in and make changes.

Marshall public library, drill down to find the outboard manuals.

I wanted to also say that the cable end to the throttle linkage is hard plastic, I had one once that was so stretched out of shape from some cracker head trying to adjust his throttle against the linkage arm it had to be replaced. This can be the culprit causing slop in the throttle.

Sorry about that. At first I couldn't figure out where I was supposed to be searching on the Marshall library site...then I figured it out.

I'm going to be taking apart the control box later today to see what's going on in there. I did crack it open a hair and saw some cobwebs etc so I def needs to be cleaned/lubed. I also want to test the overheat buzzer to make sure it's working.

the power pilot is a can of worms, be careful in there.

PS I edit too...but not as fast as some ....lol good luck, holla at me if you need something, I have long history with the 3 cylinder looper's and controls.
