Ok here some pics of the outboard..
"Dont really know much about these larger outboards:confused:".. all i can really notice that the broken is a clip on the carby there... id like to try and start it with the electric starter but dunno what the go is with getting the starter motor to turn without having a key hooked up, just got a battery to hook it up too but no key or nothing.
Was going to pull the water pump out see how it looked before starting it. but thats come to a stop today due to rain..
anyways this is how she looks abit ruff at the moment but nothing abit of paint cant fix :D enjoy!! any help is most appreciated:cool:

Model # RDL28B (if I am seeing it right) makes it a 1966.

Good luck

Re: Johnson super sea-horse 33 electric

BTW nouseforaname, I just picked up a '69 33hp this fall. It's the same 40.5 cu in block as all the late 50's 35hp's. I like the 33 as it's a cleaner simplier engine to work on than the later 40's. It has the electric choke solenoid which is nice and the adjustable high speed jet which I like. (easier to clean).

To turn the engine over simply get a set of jumper cables and connect the positive from the battery to the big wire nut on the side of the starter and then the neg from the battery to a good ground anywhere on the engine or block. If it starts you will have to pull the choke out to stop it.

if you read the top secret info at the top of this thread it will help you greatly in getting the engine up and running.

Re: Johnson super sea-horse 33 electric

Hi nouseforaname. I have a '66 33 hp just like this too. They're pretty easy to get up and running. Samo is right about checking the starter. Ulitimaltely you'll want to get a red(+) and black(-) wires and run them to a battery. A small motorcyle/atv battery is usually enough, but you can use a big marine starting battery if you want. Don't be affraid to play with these guys. They're very simple and straight forward. Just take your time and go slow. Realize you may need to put $100-200 in the form of a carb kit, impeller, points, plugs, maybe coils, fluids, but it will be well worth it and she will run for years to come. Many of the parts are readily available and are interchangeable with other models from the era. Most of the basic bits can be found here at iboats. B/c they're a little on the large side you may need one or two tools that are a bit bigger than usual, but otherwise no special tools required. Keep us posted. Fuel mix is 50:1, but many folks run 24:1 on these guys b/c they are a bit older and a little extra oil never hurts especially if you're just bringing her back to life. I can also recommend Deep Creep by Sea Foam . It's a a great engine decarbonizer, cleaner/lubricant which is sprayed into the carb as the motor is running. It makes the motor smoke like @#$#, but it cleans it out really well. Made both of my '60s Johnsons run and idle much smoother than ever. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Wow, it's seen some salt water use. Great motors. The old 33's are pretty much a continuation of the old 35's from '57, with the exception up the engine shroud. They're quite dependable and simple to work on.

samo_0tt: Thanks for the info mate will give it a go with the battery just wasn't sure if you needed a key to get the starter goin, got this 33 of eBay for $115. au dunno what that is for you guys.. but im more than happy to spend abit on it get it cleaned up and find a nice boat for it to.
just read threw the awakening a sleeping outboard.. awesome info thinking of printing it out and putting it on the shed wall

as for the army no i dunno i thought maybe one of yous would be able to shed some light on that lol...

:D thanks kfa4303: for the info . yeah i love my old johnson's Outboards..
going to pull the lower unit off until i found one of the bolts stripped  its one of the ones on the bottom holding the lower part on.. i was thinking the best way to get this bolt out was by cutting a slit in the blot and trying to screw it out with a screwdriver, ive never really worked with stripped or threaded bolts. ill have to skip the water-pump until i get get this bolt off..

So until then ill drain the fluid out of the leg take a look.. take a carbi apart and have a look at it..

Thanks for the help guys ill keep ya's posted on how i go :D

Re: Johnson super sea-horse 33 electric

Are you sure that's a 33? Cause the 33's I'm aware of do not have 2 water tubes and do not have the super quiet housing on the lower leg? (including mine!) It looks more like a 40. But looking back I see a 28 in your model #. Is it possible it's a 28hp? I don't know much about them.

As long as you've got it apart, replace that impeller. Don't take a chance on the old one. By the way, that motor is a 40hp, RDL-28.

If the veins on the impeller are folded over at all, thats a sign of needing replaced:cool:

Yea, I agree. That is a 40. 28's and 33's were the older style single wall motor leg, like the '57 Big Twins were.

Re: Johnson super sea-horse 33 electric

hate to pile on, but they're right. you should really get a new impeller. you'll be glad you did. they're only about $15 a piece. the veins should stick out straight to the side when new. they'll take on the curved shape as you rotate the drive shaft by hand while reattaching the impeller houseing. Also, right about it not being a 33 hp. I'm thinking maybe a 40 too. maybe you just have a cowling from a 33 ? that being said, glad you got the lower unit off and are getting a chance to see and learn more about your new toy. she'll be runnin' in no time.

Re: Johnson super sea-horse 33 electric

I agree, get a new impeller also. But if not, and you're cheap and lazy like me, I'd reverse it! I would check it first for any tears in the rubber, and if none, I reverse em. Yes, you can all let me have it now! But I have never had a cooling related engine failure so I feel confident in doing it. And I have a lot of engines that I own and work on.

Oh and yeah, when I put my 33 away for the winter and parked it beside my Lark 40, I also realized that the hoods were inter-changable. So that's probably what happened with yours. Be happy, you got a free 7hp! And parts are more common for the 40's as a lot were sold for a long time and they're a dime a dozen.

Well.. got the starter motor working just need to see if it's sparking properly now..
Drained the lower unit today.. all seem to be ok down there fluid was nice and transparent,
I was wondering if you can take the drive shaft out and then pour the oil down that way???
Im asking because i couldn't find any bottles with the pumps on them to pump it up.Just bottles of the oil, If not i was thinking of putting a hole in the lid and finding something that fits the drain hole and stick it in the lid and squeeze the oil up threw that way.. cheers nouse:D

The pumps are available at any outboard dealer. I also think Walmart has them. Last time I bought one I think it was around $10.

You're trying to turn an easy job into a difficult one! No, you cannot remove the prop shaft to put the oil in. Cant you get a cheap pump down there? Or can't you get lube in squeeze tubes? Both those are easy options here. If you cant get either, I would warm up the oil, get a funnel, lay the engine on it's side and pour it in the lube holes. Slowly.
