Johnson stops dead!

I am having another problem with my 35 H.P. 1983 Johnson. I do not know the model or serial number. It has been running great all this year until today. While going at wide open throttle today, the motor just flat out quit as though the kill switch was shut off (which it does not have). The motor would then not start until I let it just sit there a few minutes. Started back up, did the same thing again after running about 3 minutes wide open. Started up after another rest. I tried to start it back up with starting fluid when it quit to see if it was the fuel pump. Did not even fire with the starting fluid, so I am assuming it is not a fuel pump issue. Then the next time it started, I was going about half speed and it died again. When it dies, it is very quick. No hesitation or missing or coughing, nothing. It just dies right now!!
Makes me wonder if it could be flooding with fuel then after it sits for a few minutes (like 10 minutes) it starts and runs again for awhile. It is not over heating as the water pump is working great. I am thinking maybe the float in the carb is the issue?? Can I be right on this? I am just guessing on this, but it seems to be flooding and maybe that is why. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My guess is you overheated it....vapor locked maybe. Either way it's probably cooked. Is this a remote or a tiller motor?

Peeing means nothing. Thermostat or maybe you sucked something up. Alarm working properly?

Once you rule that out we can move on to a possible fuel problem.

test spark immediatly when it quits. CD module may be faulty (or charge or pickup coil under flywheel.. those can be multimeter resistance tested.. if all spark is lost, all 3 can be the culprit).
good luck!

Check for spark immediately when it stop.
CDI box maybe die when it heats up.
Electronic components are sensitive to heat when gets old.

No alarm on it that I know of. I
Bad connection ?----Broken wire somewhere?

t was a tiller converted by someone in the past to remote. Really great condition up until this happened today. Took cover off and motor was not real hot to the touch, so I do not think it overheated, but it may be possible I suppose as I do not know too much about outboard motors. My thoughts were that it was flooding.
Try running it with the Gas Cap on the Tank, loose

I've been doing this as I had a previous problem with the ball sucking closed before. Thanks.

I am going to get a new impeller installed. I don't know how old the current one is, but it does seem fine but maybe it is not.

If in fact it overheated , you need to do a compression test.-----Post the numbers here.-----A " new to you " motor should always start the next life with a new impeller.

Running around at WOT causes engine failures.
No, those engines were design to last over 1000 hrs at WOT. Back in those days, if you tried that with an Automotive/Truck Engine, it wouldn't make it 300hrs.

O.K. Guys. The engine did not overheat from the way it felt to my hand when she quit yesterday. I do not know how old the current pump is in it, but seller told me the pump was just renewed before I bought the boat last fall. Current compression is 105 on top, 112 on bottom cylinder. I want to install a new power pack after talking to a mechanic on the phone this morning. I was wondering if anyone here can give me a part number for it when I cannot tell you a model number of the motor I got. There are no tags on the motor with any kind of numbers on it at all. It is a 1983 35 H.P. Johnson. It was a tiller motor originally but converted to a remote controlled motor some time ago by the previous owner. I am finding all kinds of power packs, new & used on line, and they all say they will fit a 25 30 or 35 H.P. Johnson, and they look different. I do not want to buy the wrong one and be stuck with it. A part number would help me a great deal. Thanks. For the prices shown for used ones, I might just go with one of those, Any thoughts??

How do you know it's an 83? Can you post a picture link? Pull up you picture and hit the share button....that's an option.

If not or whatever your part number comes up with 582452 or 0582452. New ones (OEM) are $87.68 and that's the cheapest or 3 kinds, sierra and CDI. At that price I wouldn't go used.

Best of luck to you.

There may be a part number on the bottom of it. May be able to see one when I remove the old one, jonesg. Saltchuckmatt, I saw the same one on line for a price of $43.00 and that is a new one. Free delivery too, and the same part number that you listed here, so I think i will order that one. Will remove the old one tomorrow to see if there is a part number somewhere on it that I cannot see right now. Actually looks like a simple job to replace it, just want to be sure I am getting one that will be the right fit for my motor. Looks like the part you posted has the correct amount of wires and the right plugs on it, Thanks. Also, I do not know how to post pix on line, but my grandson posted my motor when I first got it and when I bought it with the boat & trailer, I was told it was a 1991. Someone on this site saw the picture and told me it was a 1983. I had the cables changed back then, and mechanic that did the work said it was a 1983 as well, but he could not find any I.D. numbers on it at all.

Thanks to all of you guys! I think I am going to get a new water pump for sure because I do not know tha age of the current one anyway, AND for the cheap price, I am going to switch out the power pack as the current one is most likely the original one, and they are pretty cheap ($43.00)for a new one, so it cannot hurt anything and I hope that solves my problem I first wrote about here. Thanks all. Once I get her completed, I will post here if things are o.k. afterwords.

Not sure if your getting OEM or not, but if you aren't, I'd think about that one.

Might just be me though....last week I just purchased 2 brand new ignition coils for my 85 30hp even though they were working. Coils lose "energy making abilities" when they get older and just like the power pack if you need them buy oem if it's available.

Best

What is the brand of the new power pack for 43 dollar!!
Check if it is a Chines manufacturer.
In my opinion keep away from Chines aftermarket parts.
It is crap, buy a OEM, Sierra or CDI part and you will not be disappointed.
