Johnson seahorse painted combustion chamber

Here's something different; I think. I've used a 6hp 1976 seahorse for perhaps a hundred hours before it seized, due to a gummed piston. Having dismantled it, I discovered the combustion chambers appeared to have been red-leaded. I cannot suppose that this could have been expected to survive in use, although much of it clearly has: neither would I suppose it contributed to efficient cooling. Has anyone come across this practice?

This was standard practice on the late 60's thru 80's.

Is this something a person should be on the lookout for when purchasing an outboard produced during these years?? I have a friend of mine who always seems to get his hands on motors from the 60s to the 80s. If its a common cause of a seized motor, perhaps I can pass along some info to a buddy.

Flaking or removal will not harm engine....

Don't worry about it. The red didn't cause the mtr to seize.
