Does it matter?
Went fishing this weekend and when I pulled it out of the water I noticed that plastic ring was missing on the prop.

Not really. It is there to improve prop efficiency of the prop at speed. However a missing ring on a 9.9 or 15 doesn't really matter as they don't go that fast anyways if you have 140 it might make a difference.

As I understand, those rings were designed to help (especially on smaller motors, 9.9/15) disapate the exhaust when in reverse.

it's off a 25 hp,
But now that I think about it I wonder if I did loose a bit of hole shot power and top end.
I did seem a little slower, but not by much.
It's also a 3 cylinder.

I guess the manufacture of the mtr didn't know what he was doing when he put the ring on the prop.

The plastic ones (lexan) are still available for some motors, they are a bugger to fit though.....

The correct name for them is a "converging ring".

OK what's the downside to not having the ring?
AEROCOOK is also missing it.

Not much but i found this......

The loss of a converging or exhaust ring from a thru-hub exhaust propeller will mean that the exhaust gases going through the propeller could either escape between the propeller and the gear casing if the converging ring is missing or not be properly deflected if the exhaust ring is missing.

The first time I used my 9.9 Johnson I didn't know there was supposed to be one there and mine was missing. My 14' aluminum boat wouldn't plane at all. I got a new 4 blade thats flared at the end and it does fine. And no, the hub was not slipping. It would just cavitate. If your prop is flared at the end that means its a newer one and that why you're not having the issue
