johnson J25ESSS 2000 shift linkage?

johnson J25ESSS year 2000. I'm trying to drop the lower to change the pump impeller but I can't seem to find where the shift linkage separates. I can see the linkage in a diagram but can't find it on the engine, it almost looks like I would have to take off the powerhead to get to it. Anyone familiar with this engine? Remove water intake screens #30, remove shift rod connector nut #49, that will disconnect the shift linkage.
