Johnson controls

Hey, I got a boat givin to me. I took it out for the first time last night and had a blast it's a 16' Sangster w/Evinrude 60, Johnson controls. It goes into gear (forward and reverse) right away when the lever is pushed or pulled as it should. But in order to get throddle I have to push it almost 3/4 of the way before it starts to go. All the throddle is at the last 3/4. Makes it hard to control. Is there a adjustment? This is the first boat I've ever owned. Or a link to something that will direct me?

Here's a pic of the controls

Thanks, Walter

Re: Johnson controls

Some engines have an adjustment wheel where the throttle cable connects to the engine. There will be a wheel about an inch and a half wide which when turned the correct way takes up the slack in the cable.
When adjusting make sure the butterfly is just closed at lowest throttle point.
If you can put up a photo of where it connects to engine that would help
Is the warmup lever working ok?

Yes the warm up leaver works great.

Here's a picture. I tried adjusting the dial is the lower right. It didn't seem to make a difference.

Re: Johnson controls

The outer one looks like your throttle, is the inner one connected to the gearbox lever?
Check for kinks in the cable, that can cause this problem.
If the throttle connector on the outer is moved by the warm up lever and also the throttle eventually moves that connector too then it will be an issue in the control box

I tried adjusting the nut/wheel. Didn't seem to make any difference. Not sure where to go from here. I tend to think it may be the cable.

A free boat and engine is great! It's a tad rusty though but it runs so a great deal! What year/model is the 60hp?

You need to open up the control box and see why the warmup lever is able to pull the cable immdiately but the main lever isnt.
Post a photo of inside the box if possible, if you get stuck.

This sounds pretty much normal to me.....3/4 of the way might be a little excessive though if that's actually the case.....you need to remember it needs to be fully in gear before any throttling up can be permitted.....are you getting full throttle (butterflies completely open) at WOT?

The warmup lever is a different story.....while ever its raised it isnt possible to select a gear so there is no need for any delay before throttle up.....

It all seems exactly the way the control box was designed to function imo.

Ya it sat for 3 years, must have been moisture under the cover

It's a 1980 Evinrude 60

Thanks guys, I'll take a look in the control box and see. Is their adjustments inside?

Re: Johnson controls

i had the same controls before. there is no adjustment inside. the adjustment is under the cover where you indicated. about 3/4 is the way mine was. maybe take it apart and grease the mechanisim. otherwise enjoy!
