Have a 20hp 1985 that I got parts to do electric start.Something that I hadn’t seen info on was the timing adjustment screw.I ended up with two starter brackets. One from a 1977 35hp and the other from a 2003 25hp.I saw the 2003 starter bracket has the area for the timing adjustment screw notched out where as the 1977 is not.Is this normal from factory to have bracket notched out on the newer models? I know they have diffferent timing34* and 30*.

Looks like that was cut out. Maybe the the end of the adjustment screw was messed up and needed to be shortened.

Could be?I wanted to use this black bracket but hate to now,not that it will make much difference as long as I get timing right.I will have to take a closer look and measure it and take a look at the end. This was on a remote controlled motor,so not sure if someone did that trying to get the timeing right due to some other throttle control issue.?Shouldn’t have to cut that casting out at all.The rubber stopper on the end looks ok.The cutout was done pretty well.

After looking things over and making sure there was no changes made from factory it is for sure a poor attempt to compensate for some timing issue.Screw was fine as far as length.Shame, hate to have to repair/make a spacer so I can use it on my electric start add on,but still have the older version just not black.

I don’t think it would have any effect on your adjustment. You still have the same distance from the backside of the bracket to the stator. Maybe the threads were damaged at the start of the so they cut it back rather than retapping the threads.
