I recently bought a pontoon with a Johnson 9.9 (Model J10EVLSIC Year 2000). I was told when I bought it that it has water pump issues. I started it up fairly easily, but as suspected, it's not peeing water.

So, I go to drop the lower unit (no shop manual) and can't get it to drop. I've loosened the shifter linkage, and from what I've read and can look up, it should drop! I've shifted it to both forward and reverse, spun the fly wheel, spun the prop in hopes that it would help... No dice. So now what? There's something I'm missing, I just don't know what it is, I'm hoping you folks can help! What am I missing???

Thanks!

Do you have any gap at all between the LU and midsection? Where did you "loosen" the shifter linkage?.....there are a total of six bolts securing the LU to the midsection.....if it still wont budge the top of the driveshaft may be stuck in the crankshaft splines.

Btw, the motor is a 2001 model.

Yes, all the bolts came out ok, and in reverse I get plenty "gap". If the driveshaft is stuck, what are my options?

The sticker with model number says 2000, not that it matters.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Look into the "gap" between the g/c and the exhaust hsg. You will see a shift rod connector. Loosen the lower bolt and remove it and the g/c should come off.

The linkage is in the middle section, it's a brass fitting (for lack of a better word) with a SS bolt holding the upper and lower linkage together. Looks like this...

Did you remove the lower bolt on that connector completely?

No, I loosened the top one till I could see the linkage slide up and down in the brass sleeve. Should I remove the bottom bolt as well? Unless the linkage has some sort of ball on the end of it inside the sleeve, it appears that it should just slide apart.

The two opposing linkages do have ball shaped ends......remove the bolt completely.

Ha! So frustrating! I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just to finish this thread...

Taking the bolt out of the brass linkage block was exactly the problem. Three more turns of the ratchet and the lower unit fell right off.

Thanks again to all that commented!
