Johnson 9.9 Shift Problem

I have an older Johnson 9.9 most likely late 70's early 80's with electric start. I recently replaced the prop. The original was a 3 blade 9.25 x 8` pitch. The original had a spun hub. I had on hand a 9.25 x 9` pitch so I tried that one. It worked but moved the boat very slowly. So I then went and bought a new prop 9.25 x 8` with 4 blades instead of three. Worked much better. First run out with the boat I hit a rock, bent the blade a little which is fixable but it also now has no forward or reverse. It shifts but there is nothing engaging. I'm not very knowledgeable in outboard motors and the local marine shop is an hour away and extremely high priced. Can anyone provide some guidance on what may be wrong and how I can diagnose and repair it? Thank you in advance.

Does that motor have a drive pin behind the prop? It may have broken or fell out when you were changing props.

Re: Johnson 9.9 Shift Problem

There is no drive pin or shear pin that I know of. These props have a rubber hub that is supposed to slip. I removed the lower unit to see if I could make any further determinations and I found once removed I could hold the drive shaft with vise-grips and am unable to spin the prop which would make me think the lower end is intact. I'm attaching a picture of the upper end of the drive shaft. It does not appear to have what I would call any fresh breaks but there is no spline only some very slight notching. Would anyone know is this is normal? Perhaps the shaft broke up in the base of the powerhead?

It looks like the drive shaft has sheared off at the o-ring groove. What is your model number, need to look at a parts breakdown of your engine.

Yep I'm inclined to agree. I'm attaching a couple more pics. Now I'm considering converting it to a short shaft.IMG_20110605_165639.jpg IMG_20110605_165704.jpg

Also, how do I get the remaining piece out of the base of the power head?

I've also ordered a service manual from Iboats that should help me greatly

Yep, it's sheared off. If it is not seized into the crankshaft you might try a good extendable magnet, otherwise you are going to have to pull the powerhead.

So a short shaft, a new lower shift lingage, anything else to convert to a standard length motor?

Re: Johnson 9.9 Shift Problem

Ok this is where it gets interesting. The pictures attached show the nameplate tag and the freeze-plug. I also included a picture mounted on the boat. As you can see I added an extension to the transom which is why I'd like to shorten the shaft. Whats your best guess what this motor really is?

Re: Johnson 9.9 Shift Problem

I think someone has changed the transom bracket.
Bracket #LD-12 = 1967 5 hp.
Core plug on block J10SELCSE = 1980 9.9 hp.
All you will need is a short driveshaft, shiftshaft and water tube to convert it to a short shaft engine.
