Re: Johnson 9.9 hp Sea Horse

Paul Thanks ; the pics on the web site specified by the machinist shows a 1978or79 which looks quite close but, the sea-hosre emblem on the front is reversed??? This motor runs fine, we just want a maual to be able to keep good maintenance and do any repairs that may occur. Still frustrated - Thanks

The model number is only on the welsh plug if you're lucky. I haven't been able to beat '77-79 yet. Those ignition coils were replaced with the kind where you can pull off the spark plug wire in 1980. If you were to get a replacement today, it would be that later style. Reinforcing that is that you have a pre '83 transom bracket.
There's two things that complicates the hood. It may not be original (they get swapped all the time) and the Canadian emblems are sometimes different from the US ones.

Ah, I think I've got it. There's a wire clip on that engine that wasn't on the '78 or '79 models as they routed the wires differently. So I think it must be a '77. The '77 emblem from the parts catalog looks close too ('Seahorse followed by the horsie')

Really, at this stage it's immaterial since the changes they were making were so minor.

Looks like you got the same lovely weather we did yesterday. :)

Ok. I've read that the only difference in the 9.9 & 15 is the air intake is larger and the jets in the carb are larger - block and everything else is the same. This change enabled another 1000rpm top end. Thats nice. Bottom line if we wanted to get some paper work other than the site recommend, What Model No.would we call this - assuming that it is a 1977.

Paul that 15 in the pic is identical in the decal. On the site recommended is a 1980 showing the manual starter and starter spool interlock ratchet, which looks identical except the red dog.

I'm certain you have a '77. It's the only one that matches. Even if the cowl came off some other outboard.
Given that's a rope-start longshaft 9.9hp, an appropriate model number is 10RL77A
The cowl's applique is unique to '77.

The carb change to get 15hp is true up until the early 80s where they tweaked up some other aspects to improve performance too. Don't expect to gain much in the bottom end, but at full speed it will help - especially on a light rig. Not that I've tried it myself.
