Hello everyone. New to boating, just picked up a little Stratos 165 open bow with the Johnson 70hp vro to pull my boys around on a tube. The tilt and trim worked well when I checked it out, but at the dock with it all the way up, it would not go down. Pump was running, but nothing happening. A fellow boater showed my how to release with the manual, but it would only go back up. Fluid level was good, when I stood on the back of the plane board with it manually released down, it started to move and then function fine. It is only when I run it all the way up that it will not come down. Once I get on it and get it to start moving, it is fine thru as long as it doesnt go up to the stop (the little stand off bars were out of the way). I dont know anything really about boating, but it almost seems as if there is a pressure relief that is sticking when the tilt goes all the way up and dead heads? Not sure on the little hydraulic systems on these, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

The tilt tube nuts are too tight and need grease. Check fluid level

Ok, I will check that. Would that be the case if I back out the manual relief and it comes down on its own, but wont come down under power event though I here the pump motor running?

Thanks

Well, I checked the nuts and they were not tight, backed them off slightly though, fluid level was full and issue remains. Its odd in that the tilt goes all the way up, hits the hydraulic bypass, and then wont come down. Manual release allows it to come down easily, so it doesnt appear to be binding. When I put my weight and bounce a bit on the plane board I can get it to start retracting and working normal again all the way up just shy of bottoming it out. Sure seems like a sticky relief or something of that nature?

Sounds like you got a sticky valve in the valve body.

Yeah, thats kind of what it is looking like. I will disassemble, just curious if anyone had run into a similar scenario.

Thanks
