I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this forum it is a very interesting read.
I also have a problem and hope someone can help me trouble shoot.
My 1992 70hp johnson idles rough and stalls as I shift it into gear. Also it sounds as if it is missing once in a while while running at any speed.
Its getting hard to start and I have to use the fast idle feature where the throttle plates are open slightly.
I have carefully rebuilt the carbs. They were very clean. Not much in there to go wrong idle jet and a fixed high speed jet.
My compression is 95 100 and 105
I have done a link and sync.
The spark is yellow not blue.
I have put in new plugs.
the gas is clean and fresh
tank vent is open
Drained the float bowls there was same amount of fuel in each I can hear the needle valves click shut as i pumped them full again.
The motor stalls as I plug off each carb air intake.
Seems to run the same if I take off # 1 plug wire but the thing sparks while cranking.
my induction timing light was unimpressed with the spark on each cylinder and did not trigger a flash. I will recheck with some one elses light if needed.
The motor is stamped with 19 btdc is this for wide open throttle or idle?
Is my compression too low?
could my power pack have packed it in? Is there a test for this?
I should get a proper service manual I know.
I've been left bobbing in the sea twice too often and its hard to paddle a 17 foot aluminum any distance. Any advice would be great. please and thanks. tom
