Hi all,

1988 johnson 60 hp runs fine at wot but need to choke to idle or below 3500 rpm to keep running. Also need to choke to get above 3500 rpm. Any ideas I suspect low speed jets or sync and link.

Thanks,

Rebuild them. The carbs are gummed up causing a lean condition.
I suggest taking it in and getting it done this time. This will save you a lot over hardache and frustration. Its 300 bucks well spent when it idles all the time just perfectly.

Agreed. Do the carbs and replace fuel filters.

If the filters are full of black powdery debris, then also check the inside of the fuel lines for ethanol "rot" It'll look a lot like a dry rotted trailer tire. The inside of the hoses will be all cracked up just like that. That stuff is killin fuel lines & the primer bulbs too. Hope it's an easy fix for ya, Cork!

Thanks, I will rebuild carbs and go from there. The filter is new and the old one had no black debris, fuel lines are all in good shape no cracking inside or out.

Okay sorry for delay but work and all.
I rebuilt the carbs and still having low rpm issues. Will idle now if I use the fast idle and bring the rpm up to 1100 or 1200 but still have the dredded bog at low rpm have to choke to get it going works fine at wot. I noticed that the spark advance moves before the throttle so adjusted so that they move at the same time. Spoke to the local OMC tech and he advised me to adjust the throttle and spark advance and turn idle up to 1000 rpm. Haven't tried it yet but will post the outcome.

Spark advance should move before cam makes carb/s open. Are you sure your getting enough fuel to engine at idle? Check compression, check for properly gapped and right plugs. And when you rebuilt the carb/s, did you use OEM kits? were the core/welch plugs removed, was the carb/s allowed to soak overnight in carb cleaner? were the carb components all removed before soak? post back results.

Thanks Monte,
The OMC tech I spoke with told me the spark advance should move with the cam and your saying spark advance should move before the cam moves. Currently the spark advance moves with the cam.
Compression is good, new plugs proper gap, rebuilt carbs with OEM kits soaked with all components removed.
