Johnson 50 VRO oil questions?

New to boating:

So I want to service my engine (Johnson 50 VRO, 2-cycle) for the summer

What I want to know is what is the correct oil/brand (weight) to use as recommended by the manufacture for lube replacement?

Any recommendations as to where to purchase the correct oil? Online or local auto shop, or just plain old walmart?

Where do I get the replacement gaskets for both the "vent plug & drain plug"?

I know that I will need to find the model number for the engine for future engine replacement parts, where do I locate it on the actual engine?

Any help is appreciated, Thanks

I just buy walmart outboard oil.
There should be an ID plate on the leg or mounting bracket, if not look for a silver dollar size welch plate on the block.
Model number will look like J50tclea or similar, just punch it into google and voila.!

You might need a small impact screwdriver to loosen the drainplugs, don't mess up the screwhead. Pic below, $25 at any auto store. If you've never used one before practice on something else before whacking it on your outboard.

Any TWO-STROKE outboard oil will work fine but make sure you see TCW-III on the label. For lower unit lube just check the label for "Lower Unit Lube". Any store that sells boating supplies will have the gaskets for the drain and fill screws, the engine oil, and the lower unit lube. WARNING: When you get ready to change the lower unit lube the PHILLIPS HEAD screw IS NOT a fill or drain screw -- DO NOT remove it.

As stated, use a TCW-3 rated outboard oil.

I would empty the oil injection tank and refill it with fresh oil. MAKE SURE YOU MIX FUEL 50:1 (one pint to six gallons) UNTIL YOU VERIFY OIL USAGE FROM THE TANK.

The fill/drain plug seals are available at any BRP/OMC dealer (Johnson/Evinrude). they are cheap, pick up a half dozen or so.

The gear lube needed is BRP/OMC "Hi Vis". THe BRP/OMC dealer offers a very nice pump kit. It will mount right on a quart bottle for easy changing.

I am assuming that when you speak of the impeller, you are reffering to the water pump for the engine? How can you tell when it is time to replace the impeller? Are there any "warning" signs? The impeller is for cooling...like the water pump...correct? So when the water is NOT "spitting out a strem of water" of the back of the outboard, I am assuming that the "IMPELLER" is NOT working any longer? Would this fix be difficult to do? I am good with automotive fixes but new to boating. Again I have a Johnson 50 VRO. Will look up the serial number for more detailed info. Thanks

Think of the impellar as a consumable item that should be replaced as part of the over all maintence schedule of the outboard. Over time the impellar's fins start to curve and or become brittle. While water may continue to circulate thru the powerhead, the stream may be less than what is required to prevent damage to the block. Replacing the impellar is a fairly simple process (at least for the older OMC engines) and inexpensive. Replacement along with ensuring that the engine has sufficient oil in the fuel is cheap insurance that will serve you well during the boating season.

think of it like this; you do not wait until your car engine blows up before you change the oil..you change the oil before it loses its lubricity, not after. was that even a real word?? LOL same thought follows your brake pads. If you are not sure when the last time the impeller was replaced then it needs to be replaced. and do it every couple of years, even if the motor just sits up and is not used much.

So what do I llok for when I go to buy oil for the replacement of the lower unit? Which wieght? I have no clue...Once again..thanks for all the help..

I am also assuming that this means that I also "should" replace the airfilter and spark plugs too?

There are no air filters. Read up in the "Top Secret Files" at the top of this section. Ask any questions from there.

Is it okay/normal to remove the top lid of the impeller for inspection, or would I possibly "ruin" a gasket by removal? Also many thanks to "jonesg" for the great links. You guys are the BEST! So very helpful..I would buy you a beer
