Johnson 50 2stroke Starting issue

Starter is new.
Battery is new and charged.
The solenoid clicks and the starter bendix jumps up, but as soon as it makes contact with the fly wheel it stops trying. It never turns the flywheel.
I hear what sounds like an arc or something, likely from solenoid but hard to be in two places at once.

Can the solenoid be suspect? Other than the "touch the battery wire to the starter post side of the solenoid" is there another way to test?

Check flywheel key.-----Remove lower unit and see if motor will spin over easy.----Tried cranking with sparkplugs out ?

spark plugs are out.
it will rotate one full rotation (flywheel) and then it stops.
if I turn flywheel counterclockwise, it will go one full rotation and then it stops. i can then turn it clockwise, one rotation and it stops.
(this is with plugs out and wrench on flywheel)

I can also turn it with the starter, but only one full rotation and then it stops.

that shed some light on her?

Sounds like something is broken inside the engine.-----How did it run for you last season ??-----Myself I have a lot of experience with " parts motors " like that.-----I would not hesitate to take this engine apart !!

took it out last week, running about 85% throttle and it just stopped

not sure what you mean by "last season"...

Sounds like the connecting rod broke or lower unit is KAPUT.-----Drained the gear oil ?-----Running with tested VRO or mixing at 50:1 ratio in the tank?

Without plugs, it should be easy to turn the flywheel....if you can't, then you have an engine issue... Did someone forget to mix oil in the fuel ?

Definitely a good mix.
Some people are saying lower unit, but if in neural, is that possible?

Others said flywheel key?

Thoughts?

???---In neutral the gears are all turning !----So if gears / bearings are broken the flywheel stops.------Could be loose bits under the flywheel too.-----For many of us it would be easy to diagnose this motor.----But we cannot touch / see / hear your motor !!

Nothing to hear.
One rotation of flywheel.
Compression seems present but haven’t tested.
What do you want to “touch”?

Most likely broken rod in crankcase but like everyone said other things can stop it.
Put a pencil in the spark plug holes and see if they are going up and down. If that is ok pull the gearcase. Look for any binding.

Pretty sure your not going to like the outcome.

Buy a 70 HP.

Do you see any holes in the case?
Did it make and noise when it stopped running?
There is no simple answer here. You will need to do some exploratory surgery to find out what went wrong and it’s likely not going to be good news. But maybe you will get lucky.

What is your plan?
Can you move the flywheel by hand or do you need the wrench?
If it moves by hand and smoothly i would drop the lower unit and rule that out first.
It’s the easiest way to start the troubleshooting shooting. JMO

I can't move it by hand, need a wrench, and that only gets me the one full rotation, then it locks up. The fact that I can't move by hand may not be a factor of the motor - it could be that my hands are pretty bad and I have to use a tool.

I'm going to put in f/n/r gear, see prop spin, etc. I may pull the plugs and see if I can scope the cylinders.

If you have any advice, I'm all ears!

With the plugs out it should turn very easily by hand even with one hand. It sure sounds like you have some internal damage.

Yeah... I'm wondering.
Just did a quick check.
Neutral: prop spins freely
fwd: prop is locked
rev: prop is locked
return to neutral: prop spins freely

Probably doesn't tell much... but posted here.
