johnson 40 hp

I have a johnson 40 hp 1994 model. I was going down the lake one day and my boat starting vibrating. It finnally quit pulling. I took the foot apart and the forward and pinion gear was chewed up. So i ordered new gears put hem in and put about five ours own them same thing happened. so i ordered another set and dang i df done it again. All the bearings look good that i know of. Can any body give me any help of what could be wrong. The ports center wants 4 hours worth of labor and 600 for the gears. I can get the gears for 300 and do it an a hour. I waould rather do it my self i just can't figure whats messing them up. somebody PLEASE HELP ME thanks Brent

i was thinking thats what it might be. is there any way to tell its bent before bbuying one?
